man i agree with you 100%. i literally cried when i heard about vernon forrest because he was my favorite boxer. i dont even want to talk about it. goodell is going to far with flexing his muscle though. its funny that he suspended michael vick in 2007 before he was charged with anything and now plaxico burress shot himself and he will be charged yet this man hasnt been suspended yet. hes just too inconsistent for my liking.
Stephen A. Man that’s a lot of truth to swallow so early in the morning, but all so on point.
Very good Stephen. Well said on all aspects.
I actually watched a portion of Steph’s videocast over the weekend, and it was bizarre. One thing that stood out to me was that he actually give you a shoutout saying, “Shoutout to Stephen A. Smith. I don’t hate anybody…I love everybody!” I thought that was interesting since I remember some time ago, he had a somewhat falling out with you. I thought that was a good look…IF he meant it.
soulful podcast SAS
What’s up stephen, I’m a big fan. Just want to say to keep doing what your doing. I try to catch you on tv when I can. But I am following you on Facebook & Twitter, so stay up on what you’re doing. Holla at cha’ boy. Peace.
Good afternoon Mr. Smith,
I dont understand why you seem to be in favor of Michael Vick. I mean I heard you say you dont condomn what he did but you still sound like your’e sticking up for him. Yeah he served his time in jail for being a cruel insensitive prick, and treating animals like toys. Being punished in prison, and being punished by his employer is two different things. At least he was admitted back into the league. If I, or any other regular person committed such and act we would not have a job to return to with or without conditions. Then you say you were happy that Mr. Controversy himself (TO) spoke up for Michael Vick. Why am I not surprised. What a joke.
How do you think it would look if Mr. Goddell just let Vick back in the league with no conditions nothing. Michael Vick is getting all that he deserves and then some. I know I sound mean and insensitive but Im just so sick of people taking up for these spoiled athletes that have all they want and need and they screw it up. How hard is it to do the right thing damn. Even when they dont do the right thing people have a problem with the sentences or punishment that they are issued. Thats so funny to me. If it was me, or any other regular person the punishment would be worse.
Im done for now Mr. Smith. I hope you dont rip me to shreds. As you know I have all the respect in the world for you, just a difference of opinion on this particular issue. Enjoy the remainder of your day Mr. Smith. I look forward to your next podcast, article etc.
Christine
PETA! They totally lost, what little reputation when they decided to dress in KKK garb in front of last years dog show. Strangely no one brought this up…
###
From SAS: Didn’t even know about it, bro.
Is Goodell is going to the same thing with Plaxico Burress.
RIP Vernon Forrest. Is there something greater going on with these boxers?
I liked what T.O. said (which happens very few and far between) about letting Goodell spend time in a prison cell himself! There’s too much selfishness in the world. Of course he should have conditions to his reinstatement but it’s a PR move. It’s not a ’suspension’ is it? He has UNTIL week 6 to fully reinstate Vick but he will probably do it between week 3 or 4. I’m glad he’s reinstated, but i’m kind of tired of hearing about the dogfighting Mike Vick. We have to forgive and forget. It’s hard to forget when they keep tagging dogfighting with number 7.
Starbury played his role in the playoffs this year and actually looked good for a few minutes on the floor. I didn’t see anything about his 24-hour post, so I cannot comment.
u r right on stephen a.!!!!
You’re one of the best!!, keep up the good works.
What if no NFL team wants to sign Vick?
###
From SAS: Someone will sign him.
Stimulating podcast as always my Brother! Extremely sad to Vernon Forrest killed in such a manner. I have a hard time understanding why people do the things they do the way they do them. I have a hard time believing that everyone is not cut from the same cloth in a sense that they know right from wrong. How someone grown enough to think for themselves does not know that “what comes around, goes around” is true in theory and in reality baffles me. I pray for Mr. Forrest’s family and friends and all those who’s lives he touched during his time on this earth.
###
From SAS: Amen, Nate. My God bless his soul.
Another excellent podcast my man…keep up the good work. Lookin forward to the next one.
Why is the NFLPA allowing the Commissioner to take over the league? The income producing assets are the athletes. Without those high jumping, fast running, and hard hitting bucks the NFL would fold over night. My belief is that the players should be backing Vick. Thankfully, Terrell Owens has spoken up for the fearful players. After two years of imprisonment, this man has paid his debt.
I wonder if Brett Favre or the Mannings would have been handed the same sentence, the same public lynching….
Keep dropping knowledge Mr. Smith. As the good book says, “you shall know the proof, and it shall set you free.
Another great podcast.
###
From SAS: Thanks, Clif. Appreciate the love.
Stephan A you’re the best man in the media world today i wish you good luck with finding a new career, you’ll have fans wherever you go. Now for your ideas on Vick you have it down pat because the man spent 18 months in prison and he should have a fair chance to resume his football career, But because of the negative attention he recieves from PETA and other groups, while men like Donte Stallworth who actually killed a human being recieves less than half of the media attention than vick recieved just baffles me. Do Americans today really believe that a human life is less important that dogs, i just dont understand it.
Once again, Another great Podcast.
As always much love, Mari
###
From SAS: Thanks, Mari.
Long overdue but right on time, thanks Stephen A
###
From SAS: My pleasure, bro!
Stephen A.,
I am an English teacher in Newark, NJ. I’m sure you, Stephen, know the ethnic background of the community. I became a teacher because I wanted to help empower our young people to understand that if they work hard and take their education seriously they can improve their lives, communities, and the world in general. I chose to become a teacher for the same reasons you are branching out publicly in your journalism(I don’t have to say it, I’m sure by your comments you get it). I enjoy and appreciate the all encompassing Stephen. I liked you well enough before (even though I didn’t agree with everything, but something tells me that is fine with you).
I was searching iTunes for something to occupy my flight from Amsterdam to Newark recently and found your podcast. (I didn’t know you were no longer with ESPN. Multiple jobs do that to people.). I think you are doing an outstanding job, and not being with ESPN right is allowing you to provide a much greater service. I will be using your podcasts as a teaching tool this coming school year and hopefully beyond. Keep them coming!!
I’m diggin it. Good podcast. I agree with your statements about Roger Goodell. I think he has this God complex. He’s made some good decisions and cleaned up a lot of the nonsense that was going on in the league and that was admirable, however, now he’s a little too much into himself now and it’s becoming annoying. He’s contradicting himself with punishing some and not others. Goodell is making the league all about him and that’s not cool. I think Vick will land on his feet and shock some of the haters and doubters.
The Vernon Forest murder was terribly shocking. It makes you realize that we are not promised another day, and to make everyday count for something. RIP
Marbury seems like he is about to implode. It’s another case of a spoiled megalomaniac athlete who isn’t the center of attention anymore who’s making a spectacle of himself. It’s extremely sad.
Can’t wait for the next post. Good job SAS!
Steve – it has been said before, but why do you dabble in non-sports subjects that you aren’t qualified to speak of?
Please answer this question – what in your background makes you qualified to be on MSNBC? Or to even talk about Henry Gates? What a joke you are!
Stephen A , your missed on ESPN … I looked forward to your commentary. original personality…. you did it your way…big respect bro
By the way, PETA is a gang of violent people , hiding behind animals. they sick my stomach
I definitely agree with your comments about Goodell. I wonder what happened in his life that made him the power hungry and seemingly vindictive guy he is. I hope the NFL Players Union pushes to have his power checked when they start renegotiating the CBA.
Thanks Steven from speaking from the heart …. Vernon will be missed ..my prayers goes out to his family ..Your Podcast are something to look forward to ..May God Bless you to keep on doing what you have a passion for…
Thanks SAS….
In the media not many people have had the balls to admit the truth about what happened to Forrester. U kept it real! I’m from the ATL, and down here it’s a big story, everyone asks the same question: Why didn’t he just let them have the car?
Also, u were 100% right about Vick. Most people are morons, so they won’t agree. This man served time in federal prison and people still don’t want him to have a fair chance to truly rehabilitate himself. These are DOGS we are talking about, not People! I have a deep freezer full of animal carcasses (beef & chicken) right now! As a matter of fact I gotta go take out a steak for later… Peace!
i dont know how you keep doing it Stephen A, but once again good stuff my man. I totally agree with you on the Michael Vick situation let the man play he has served his time in a FEDERAL Prison that is very well known. what else does he have to do to get back on the field start begging and pleading to play, and i wonder why more players isnt coming to his defense are they scared to speak their minds or do they just not care about the man.
sup stephen a..lol man u aint lying bout ft leavenworth…thats where my fam lives..dad worked int he jail…seen both new and old jails…its no joke…love the passion u have in sports and everything u do
hey man great show as always i know you havw heard of Bill Simmons the sports guy so maybe you can tell me why he hates the lakers so much would someone please tell him that boston did not win the NBA TITLE THIS YEAR I listen to him ric bucer and marc stien yesterday and for some reason neither of them knew that ariza signed for the same money that he turned down from the lakers with the rockets so how is that lakers fault then simmons went on to say that he has never seen a champion go into the offseason and lose one of it’s key componets really where is james posey think they could have used him this year oh that’s right you haggaled over years on a contract and lost him to the hornets and all you could say was “we should be fine ” or “it’s a chance for others to step up at least they replaced ariza with something you lost kg and there went your team defence cause lets face ut for all the credit you gave paul pierce for stopping kobe what happened to him wih rashard lewis is lewis more of a problem to gurad than kobe and ray allen please defense if he has to do more than shot he is no good to you there is a reason that this is his 3rd nba team and 4th before he is finished but simmons acts like the celtics have been in the mix for the last 15 years when you are just 3 years removed from the the ping pong ball sweepstakesthe truth and nothing but the truth that’s why stephen a you are my favorite
Good morning Mr. Smith,
I hope I didn’t rub you the wrong way in my last email. I would hate for you to refrain from posting my comments, or responding to me in the future. I wasn’t trying to be disrespectful. I seem to be the only one that didnt agree with you sooooooooo maybe I missed something. Anyway I look forward to listening to you on the Steve Harvey show tomorrow. Have a great day.
Christine
Mr. Smith keep doing ya thing man. I saw you on two different news channels in back two back days keep doing ya thing. I think that more athletes need to speak on the Micheal Vick situation. On a lighter note if you can call it that, the boy Tony parker may not be playing this season. The Spurs may need an ANSWER to their point gaurd problems hmmmmmmmm. I wish there were an all star available who could account for tony scoring.
Stephen;
What can black athletes do to end the killing, shooting and hating in our communities?
@Mitch Monroe:
Why the heck would Steve Smith know the answer to that? He’s a fired journalist who dabbles in fiction, not fact.
SAS:
People really think they know what forgiveness is and they don’t. And because they don’t, it’s hard to have compassion. It’s hard for people to even forgive when it has absolutly nothing to do with them(I’m sure you know somebody like that…I do. LOL!) So in the case of Mike Vick, I think people have there own ideas about “what sin is greater that the other”. To help you out sin is sin!! That’s for those who think they are exempt because there sins haven’t been exposed like Mike Vick. My question to that would be, “Is compassion only suppose to be shown when you mess up and not others?” Oh don’t even mention that God even requires for us to forgive…they forgot all about that!!! Enjoyed you on the Steve Harvey show this morning…I love the work you do…enjoy your weekend!
Stephen A, I found you. Good luck on the website and I am wishing you well in your future. Consider me a fan. Thanks.

From SAS: Thanks, Leonard. Much appreciated. Hope you’re well.
I saw you on the ED show with PETA. The guy from PETA was so self serving and phony I had to turn from the show because it became hard to control my anger. It’s hard to have a conversation with someone that’s not trying to have one. I wrote this after the ED show, after hearing the Podcast I’m using it as a comment on Michael Vick:
American’s sensibilities pertaining to human life verses animal life seems to be completely distorted. I understand Americans have their own unique culture pertaining to animals and a desire to be the leader in the humane treatment of all life on the planet. Is this a true statement or do Americans pick and choose what life they what to show humane treatment too? Based on history and actions, we choose what life we will show humane treatment too.
When I see TV shows such as Animal Planet where animals such as cats and dogs are rushed to get emergency care and shown more humane treatment than a human being is shown that is not on TV, makes me wonder if Americans are losing their way. The TV show doesn’t show why treating the animal will probably be a waste of money because if the animal isn’t placed with a human being that will permanently take care of the animal, the animal will be euthanized, the true word is killed, murdered just because there are too many of them, we use euthanized to protect the sensibilities of people, less emotionally true. To put it in a purely economic, cold blooded, uncaring way it is a waste of tax payer’s money. Especially since we are debating whether all American human beings deserve to have health coverage.
Now here is Michael Vick, raised in the south where dog fighting is probably a part of the culture, although underground and is not considered being cruel to animals. It’s like bull or cock fighting, in some cultures eating dog or cat is a delicacy. Now, because you are an American do you have the right and are you arrogant enough to say these other cultures are wrong? If you do think they are wrong and eat beef, you could be considered a two face hypocrite because in India the cow is considered sacred and is treated equal to or better than how a dog or cat is treated here in America.
To put Michael Vick in jail for two years because he fought and killed dogs seems extreme and unreasonable to a person trying to be open minded about why all American human beings do not have health coverage. American values seem distorted, especially when you have more money than you know what to do with, so you join PETA and harass the President of the United State about swatting a fly.
To call yourself a humane person and you have animals as a higher priority than an American human being, should make you question your priorities. If I say human beings are more important than animals, am I trying to be godlike, deciding what life form is more important, the one made in his image or the other creatures he created? The only way to be fair is that no life form be killed for any reason, not even survival.
I have to admit this about myself, it probably would be easier to kill a human being that has angered me than it would be to kill a dog or cat or any other animal, especially for sport. That shows how distorted my mindset is about human life and how distorted the mindset is of the people that wanted the death penalty for Michael Vick. I believe this is probably because of Media and Computer Games which uses the killing of human beings as entertainment. How distorted has your mindset become?
@Christine Cooper: It’s the “then some” that is the problem.
I totally agree with you in regards to Michael Vick. This man has spent almost 2 years in prison for dog fighting while others get days and probation for other various crimes—catch this “humans” (murder, embezzlement (billions), child molestation, rape, etc. Since when did we put more emphasis on animal then on people? Our order of priority is backward if not fool-hearted. Of course, I am not condoning what he did; nevertheless, they were dog; what about Mary Sue, Timmy, and Sally who are being abused daily or starving because they have no access to food. Do you think the PETA and other animal rights organization would fight this hard and be this dramatic over a child abuse and/or starvation? I guess that is left to be seen by their works and actions toward humans.
Stephen A,
I had a nice lengthy message for you…and I lost it somehow. So I’ll make this short and sweet. I heard you on the The Steve Harvey Show and may I say you turn the place out. You’re a serious guy, but a funny guy at the same time. Love it. But regarding Mr. Vick; you made mentioned that teams are looking to sign him soon. That’s huge. But I’m curious to know which teams are looking at him?
In my mind, I see three teams that show necessity of his talents: Denver, Seattle and St. Louis. Now he’s missed about two years of the NFL. Obviously he’s not the same guy from 2007, at least not conditionally. Can Michael Vick become a carbon copy of the QB he was when he placed his team in the NFC Championship 5 years ago? Thanks for your time. Can’t wait to hear you on the radio again.

From SAS: Will do, Trentd. Appreciate the email. Thanks a bunch.
In my expert opinion, I would say the Arizona Cardinals would be a great fit for Michael Vick. First the media attention there would be minimal compared to the North East, where ppl have projected he will go. Also by being in Arizona, he is not expected to save the team, can learn from Warner, and at the same time see if with the potent offense that they have, if he really works in the Wildcat scheme. So considering the conference and schedule that they have, he has a strong chance of getting to the superbowl and building a future home considering warner will not be around much longer and he is probably better than leinart.
You’re completely right! “A new fool” describes what he is, but he deserves the opportunity to return to NFL without suspension time. With any conviction you do your time and it’s done–you’ve been rehabilitated. Word about town is he’s coming to Sixburgh?! And we welcome him with open arms! Michael Vick is a phenomenal football player, and should be treated like such. My only question for PETA diehards is how many of you actually own Pitbulls? I bet most of them think they are too dangerous. PETA doesn’t exist in “the hood.” Dogs are dogs, cats are cats. God created Man to be ruler over all things. I feel like animals are ruling us.
Great Podcast Stephen A. –People should take head to your words, you have some great wisdom!
Great blog Steven A.
In terms of AI, do you think he could land with the Los Angeles Lakers? Phil expressed interest in him 2 years ago. Could be a chance to resurrect his career and image.
According to a poll on Forbes.com …
Here’s the list. Most hated athletes. What do you think?
1. Michael Vick
2. Manny Ramirez, Los Dodgers outfielder
3. Alex Rodriguez, New York Yankees third baseman
4. Terrell Owens, Buffalo Bills receiver
5. Kobe Bryant, Los Angeles Lakers guard
6. Allen Iverson, NBA free-agent guard
7. Isiah Thomas, Florida International basketball coach
8. Stephon Marbury, NBA free-agent guard
9. Nick Saban, Alabama football coach
10. John McEnroe, former tennis champion / bad boy
Regarding Mike Vick, I heard the comments of former well respected players (Dr. Edwards and Deion Sanders). They believed that Goodell was doing the right thing for Vick by conditionally reinstating him. Well, here we are 2 weeks after their comments, and vick is not on a team. Why? Because teams don’t want to take a chance on a guy who has an unsure future. That unsure feeling was created by Goodell. My problem is how tired I am of brothas sellin’ out to fit in. We all have to make a livin’, but at what price. The only person to speak publicly on vick’s behalf is TO. Where are the other brothas of the world (ray lewis, mike irvin, etc.) who know they’ve been through hell and back in their lives. Why can’t they publicly support vick by criticizing Goodell’s approach with vick’s situation? Someone defended them when they had turmoil in their lives. Until we (black folks) learn to speak on behalf of one another in dire straits, we will always be mistreated and misguided. I guess we all miss the most important point of the Civil Rights movement. You can’t change how a person treats you unless you speak on it! Every now and again, it feels good to know people who’ve been thru similar situations can stand with you to champion a cause to make a better situation that leads to a better person. Just Sayin’.

From SAS: I hear you, T! But we need to be very careful about what we say. I don’t agree with Deion Sanders or Dr. Edwards on the Vick issue. But I know Primetime personally. He’s a friend. And I’m here to tell you there’s no way in hell that he’s a sellout. We as Black People have to get beyond speaking derogatory of one another when we disagree. We’re not monolithic in our thoughts, our thinking. We come in all different shapes and sizes, with different beliefs, opinions, etc. Just because Deion Sanders doesn’t agree with you or myself on this matter DOES NOT make him a SELLOUT. Chill with that. It’s wrong and it’s counterproductive.
Minnesota Viking or the packer will be a good fit for Michael Vick. The guy did his time. Grab Vick while he is hungry to play football again, use him in the wild cat. You can get him cheap since he been out the game for a while. Peta, well we have homeless veteran dating back to veitnam war, there are some pets that live better then them. Where is the love for the homeless people.
Hey stepen A,I dont think T was directly calling Deion a sellout but was making a general statement about those who do. He is totally correct in his assertion though about a lot of brothas(as he said) which can also be called “passive mentality” once they feel comfortable in their situation. Correct me if I am wrong but Martha Steward indirectly financed child labor with kmart and then swindled ppl in their stocks and even she was not viewed with such hatred as Michael Vick. For forbes to even put out this bogus list about being the most hated person in america I find to be absurd. What did they do, go to a dog convention and survey the ppl there? I know for sure that it was not done in the bronx, jamaica queens, tidewater virginia, or boston. To act like this is the public sentiment is just a straight out white lie.(No Pun intended)
Keep up the good work Stephen A. You are the man keep bringing the heat

From SAS: I’m trying, Mr. Tillman. Doing the best I can

From SAS: Hey Christine! I did a Podcast last night to be posted this morning, but the damn service crashed and the folks said it’ll take them a full day to get it fixed. That’s why one was not posted today. But I’m working on it. Hope all is well with you. Take care!
Steve you did it again –your craft is amazing ..Your prospective is always on some next level ish..You always hit both side of the spectrums nicely ..It is not Vick job to be a lobbist for animals rights , his job is to give us sports entertainment .As a black women , I will always ride the shoulders of our men whether they’re right or wrong ..Its hard been a black man in America ..Two years was so unfair when CEO’s are still employed after dumping 401k’s …
Starbury is counted out by them, but not by us ..Yes AI was cheated too..He deserves better , Philly miss him dearly ..Bench players are for unskilled players , AI is a starter PERIOD …But we got to agree Steve , the friends gotta go and the yes PEOPLE he’s surrounded by …I’m leave it at that ..
“new fool and worst math student period ” Well said
