StephenA.com Breaking Exclusive: Allen Iverson Retirement Statement
NOV. 25, 2009
TO ALL OF MY FANS:
I would like to announce my plans to retire from the National Basketball Association. I always thought that when I left the game, it would be because I couldn’t help my team the way that I was accustomed to. However, that is not the case.
I still have tremendous love for the game, the desire to play, and a whole lot left in my tank. I feel strongly that I can still compete at the highest level.
Stepping away from the game will allow me to spend quality time with my wife and kids. This is a reward that far exceeds anything that I’ve ever achieved on the basketball court. I have prayed for this day and I see it as my greatest gift.
I want to thank the people of Reebok International Ltd., for always allowing me to be me and for supporting me my whole career through all the ups and downs. I have enjoyed 13 wonderful seasons in the NBA, and I am grateful.
I want to first acknowledge my fans everywhere, who have been with me throughout my entire career. Without you, there would be no me. You should all know that I appreciate your support from the bottom of my heart. Thank you!
To Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Isiah Thomas, Charles Barkley and Larry Bird, you guys gave me the vision to play the game that will be forever in my heart.
To my Mom, who encouraged and inspired me to play every day, and to all of my family and friends who stood by me from the beginning. Thank you!
To my high school coach, Michael Bailey, Coach John Thompson at Georgetown University, Coach Larry Brown and to all of my other coaches, teammates, administrators, owners and staff who’ve been a part of my career, Thank you as well!
I’d like to give a special thanks to the people of Memphis. I never played a home game for your beloved Grizzlies, but I want you to know how much I appreciate the opportunity given me by a great owner in Michael Heisley, and the support of the city. I wish the Memphis Grizzlies’ organization all of the success that the game has to offer.
And finally, to the city of Philadelphia: I have wonderful memories of my days in a Sixers’ uniform. To Philly fans, thank you. Your voice will always be music to my ears.
God Bless all of you,
ALLEN IVERSON

I think AI is one of the most misunderstood figures in sport. I appreciate his passion and love for the game, which you don’t see in all players. He sacrificed his body every game and played with so much heart. I hate to see him walk away so prematurely but I believe he’ll be back. Whatever criticism people have about AI, no one can say he doesn’t love the game.
You´re on of the greatest, AI!
First ballot Hall of Fame.

Two for the ANSWER!
I’ve been an AI fan since 96. In my eyes, he will always be the best. Allen is the reason I’m a basketball fan. It saddens my heart to read this. I’m def gonna miss his unique style of ply. No one else can begin to mimic it. I wish him well. The game will truly be different without him.
Sad thats how he’s going to go out. An embarrassment in memphis and nobody else wanting to put up with him. one of the all time greatest cant look past his own ego so that he can contribute to a team in some manner.
as a memphian who bought season tickets knowing the grizzlies would be bad, but to see him play, its a shame. I appreciate the shout out but would have preferred he play.
granted, conley sucks and he should have been starting, but some patience would have been nice.
We love you brother! We know it’s political & you can still get it done “anywhere”..so..STAY IN SHAPE..cuz..SOMEBODIES GONNA WAKE UP! THANKS FOR ALL THE GREAT MEMORIES & REPPIN THE INNER CITY PEEPS “ALWAYS”! NOBODY EVER DID THAT BETTER THAN YOU…”YOU ARE ALWAYS OUR…ANSWER”!
LUV 4 YA,
DARRELL
But what about practice?
AI, you should’ve been playing till you were 40. I know you feel the same way. You’ll be missed.
I’m happy that Allen will get more time to spend with his family, but, selfishly, I’m mad he’s retiring, especially like this. He’s been my favorite player since his rookie season and I always admired how he always remained true to himself and loyal to the people closest to him. Sad to see him go out like this, but got nothin but love for Bubba Chuck.
I still think if you were willing to come off the bench, teams, contending teams would allow you on the team and still be the AI you want to be. But as a starter things have changed. Ginoble and JR Smith are coming off the bench and playing starters mins. That’s what it is about. It doesn’t have to be over in my opinion.
CHALLENGE: Will you be willing to end your career with a contending team being one of the best 6th men ever, with the small risk of trying to win a championship?
[...] AI HAS RELEASED A LETTER TO THE FANS VIA THE STEPHEN A SMITH BLOG: [...]
Hate to see this guy go out like that. He at least deserves a chance to go out on the court, not to be banished. However, that is the nature of “The League”
Allen did not right this.
AI come back to Philly! The one thing missing on this team is solid point guard play and they need a prolific scorer. If only there was someone who averaged 27 ppg in their career…oh wait!! Come back AI, your family would love to have that trophy you win this year in Philly in their living room.
Allen Iverson was the most dominant 6 foot player to ever play the game. At times, hes competitive nature got the best of him but many times that same drive made us all appreciate his style as his moves made us cover our mouths. He took the cross-over dribble to another level. “We talking about practice” remarks brought him negative attention, however he became the first rookie in history to score 40 points or more in four consecutive games. When the game was on the line AI was, “The Answer”
Its a shame to see such a guy have to go out like this knowing that he still is one of the better players in the NBA. My favorite player of all time, I’ve enjoyed watching him play since his days at Georgetown and this day saddens me just as much as i know it saddens him to not be able to see such a great player play anymore.
Its a shame AI had to end his career this way.. It is quite amazing and truly wrong that even terrible teams like the Minnesota Timberwolves and New Jersey Nets would not seek out Iverson’s service, instead pretending their current rosters were good enough as-is. As a Sixers fan, I got to enjoy watching AI for a very long time and he will retire as my favorite NBA player ever.. Best wishes to AI~
Great player, first ballod hall of famer, scoring champ, all star, mvp…..bad atitude. Even the best have had to come off the bench. And if his game is as good as he says it is, they would not take him off the bench. If Iverson believed he had it in him, he would play off the bench and impress the coaches and give them a damn good reason to start him. I guess no more “practice” for AI.
I think its a very sad day in the NBA, when one of the greatest players and argueably the best small guard ever has to retire because he feels unwanted.
Not sure if this is a permanent retirement or not, but nonetheless I just wanted to thank you for all the entertainment you have provided to the NBA and its fans, whether on the court or off the court. You also proved that a little guy can go far in a game where height dominates. Take ‘er easy, A.I.
First.
Wow, AI gone the man was a legend to a lot of people, the man single handily changed the hip hop culture to corn-roles across the country. He did something different then most other sports legends, he stood up dressed like he was black acted as if he was black he wore our clothes in a white mans league he let it be known we can have our culture and still be successful and be the face of a company.
Thank-you AI for the memories and enjoy your family hopefully it will be the best part of your life
I am happy he has retired he came to Detroit and acted like a big ass baby didn’t want to do what was best for the team so he milked his injury. He was never a team player it wasa always about Allen Iverson. He wont admit it but he is washed up and his time passed along time ago
Love him or hate him, you will never see another A.I. in this league. Iverson dominated the NBA at his height and size is amazing. I am the biggest Jordan fan you’ll ever meet, but I enjoyed watching Iverson just as much as Jordan. He was fearless and always left everything he had on the court. Much respect to you A.I.
Allen Iverson can type? He retired because of his huge ego, he will come back and sign with a contender sooner or later, mark my words!
I am Celtics fan have been all my life. However, as one of youre biggest fans it hurts me deeply that i will not be able to enjoy watching my idol play in the nba anymore and my two sons as well will miss you im your age i grew up watching and fallowing all of youre career from Gtown to Philly and everywhere esle you have played in my opinion youre are one of the greatest basketball players and athletes i have ever seen on the court. I had the pleasure to watch play twice a year when you came on west coast trip in California. The way you preformed was amazing and in my eyes it was a privilage to watch you dance on the court the passion, desire, and heart you played with and displayed was something that will never be matched again. Every true basketball fan knows you are one of the greastest ever. I will miss you on the court thank you for all the memories you have left us with best wishes and gad bless you and youre family.
come on man, just come off the bench,be a pro
End of an era.
I am happy he has retired he came to Detroit and acted like a big ass baby didn’t want to do what was best for the team so he milked his injury. He was never a team player it was always about Allen Iverson. He wont admit it but he is washed up and his time passed along time ago
Don,t care about the NBA no more
A.I. will be missed… Good luck to you and your family.
This is quite sad. You’re telling all of your fans that you still have desire to play, but you refuse to play unless you’re handed a starting role. Your way or the highway. No compromises. This really exposes who you are as a basketball player; a guy who cares about 1 person and 1 person only. A guy who won’t sacrifice for the team. A guy who is the poster boy for the selfish scoring-only era of guards that the NBA has thankfully now passed. Good riddance; enjoy being the #1 scorer in your YMCA league.
Man, it’s a sad day when one of the best the league’s ever seen decides to leave. I give much admiration towards AI and hope the best for him. God bless man.
He’s garbage…glad he’s gone. Always a great scorer, pound for pound maybe the best, but never a team player and it showed at the end. The Denver transaction sums it up best. Remove Iverson, replace with Billups and the Nuggets get to game 6 of the West Finals…never happens with Iverson.
Iverson could really be a super sub and average 20 a night and really help a contending team. Ego won’t allow it though.
Glad you’re gone!
What a waste of a Great talent,AI will be missed.Shame on the NBA teams for i can spit out a handful of teams that would benefit both on and off the court by his presence alone.Sure he has issues but so do lots of other ballers.
This is sad as hell. Allen Iverson got disrespected by the media and the league. He was still one of the Top 10 players in the NBA. Pistons, Sixers, Nuggets, Grizzlies screw him. Sixers screw him in getting some ballers there. Media telling AI to come off the bench is like asking KG, Kobe to come off the bench. AI still got it.
I’ll miss you AI. And you got a raw deal man. NBA need to be ashame of themselves. I believe they push you out. T.O is getting the same treatment.
Saddest day in the NBA ever. An end of an era, end of so much…
My fav athlete of all time.
…AI was an amazing player…very entertaining…i feel lucky to have watched him play throughout his HOF career…he will be missed…
I’m sure a lot of people will be glad to hear of this announcment, but, I am truly sad. Anybody who watched the man play, know that he had a desire for the game only matched by Jordan. It is sad that people with much worse offenses are picked up all the time because they are seen as a piece to the magic puzzle the might bring a championship. You would think a team could find a place for a little man with a huge heart. I hope this is not truly the end unless this is what Allen truly wants. I wish you all the best AI. And good luck in all your future pursuits.
The guy wouldn’t be forced to retire if he wasn’t such a jerk…..he deserves what he gets from his time in Detroit…..he faked a back injury b/c he wasn’t starting…..if he learned how to just keep his emotions in check, he wouldn’t be reduced to and/or forced out of the NBA….As a fan, I liked watching play with both Philly and Denver. When he got to the Pistons, it was a nightmare…..he’s getting 21M for playing his love, how could you complain. Whatever frustration and anger you have, take it to the court and show what you got…
Allen Iverson you are the best basketball player I have watched since I became a fan of the NBA. I love everything about watching you. The skill, the talent, the heart the enthusiasim, the hustel, the will, the athletic ability, the determination, the ambition, and so much more.
You have been my favorite NBA player and I have thought that you are the best in the NBA.
I have cried almost as soon as I learned that “Allen Iverson plans to retire”–what I hope and wish for though is–for now.
Allen, I wish the very best for you and your family. I think it has been rough to travel away from the family for years, and to put the children to move from schools they become accustom to, and to leave friends.
Allen Iverson, I wish for you to continue to play basketball as a professional for the world to se the best basketball player there is. Yes, I do believe you are still the best. Allen Iverson, I also believe you are in your prime as a basketball player. Maybe you aren’t 100% as fast as you previously were, or your jumping ability, but you are remain one of the fastest if no the fastest, and one of the most athletic players there are in sports.
Allen, I don’t believe the foul sayings of the media; “selfish, ballhog, loser, cancer, washed up”, etc. I believe you are a team player, a hard worker, a winner, you are in your prime, and I don’t want to se eyou retire.
I may sound selfish because you are a human, and everyone needs to do what they need to do, and your family (accodring to you), needs you.
I hope you can reslove your problem that you had earlier, unless it’s already been dealt with. I also hope for you to spend time with the family. However, I also hope that you return to the NBA as an NBA player to prove you are the best and you are in your prime. At this point, to me, I just want to see you play. I would like to see you play in the east, so you don’t travel and it is easier on your family. I’d suggest that going back to the Nuggets would be good.
However, here are some other teams that I believe would fit you as a basketball player, person, and for the most part you and your family (at least most of the teams): Charlotte Bobcats, Philadelphia 76ers, New York Knicks, Houston Rockets, Miami Heat, Toronto Raptors, Denver Nuggets, Utha Jazz, Indiana Pacers, (maybe the Boston Celtics depending on the willingness of them to play you at least 30 minutes, and get at least 15 shots, and finish off the games…but that is only for the Celtics, the other teams listed would fit you if you played at least 35 minutes, and shot at least 18 per game, and started and finished games). There might be more.
Allen Iverson, I believe I am your biggest fan. I know you have probably heard the same lines a million times…and you’ve heard this a million times as well: “I am your biggest fan. I know you have probably heard that a million times”…but Allen, I believe, I strongly believe that I am. Not only your biggest fan outside of your family, but the one who understands you the most out of your fans. I think many other fans love you for the flash, and skill, talent, heart, etc. I love you for the same reasons, but so much more. I understand that your stats could truly be much higher if not for certain injuries and situations. I understand your point of views, your ups and downs…I understand the practice press conference point of view, I understand what you are saying about not coming off the bench, I understand all of this, and more.
Allen Iverson, I wish you the best, I have more to write, and surely will do so. Allen Iverson return when you are ready, may it be tommorow, or next week, etc…just come back soon. The NBA is not as exciting or fun without you, not even close. Allen Iverson you are the best basketball player in the NBA. Now you are retiring. The last player to do that was Michael Jordanl retired as the best…but he came back…please do the same. I will continue to write, because I have so much to write about you on differing topics that it could fill books.
Man the media done ran my boy out the game!! I wouldn’t even give a formal interview anyway to people who made up myths about me that people believed. I don’t care what anyone says AI should not sit behind Conley, and Stuckey anyone who really believes that let me take a hit of that stuff you smokin cuz its fire!!!
Please tell me this isn’t true. One of the greats of all time. I’m from Trinidad and his heart, toughness and underdog status due to his height has inspired me all my life. Basketball will never be the same. He was ostracized by the NBA and the media but he never gave he can still do it and get his ring. Please tell me this isn’t true
A true legend never got a ring, but the best lil man ever to play the game. Never made any excuses just played everyday like it was his last. Will be missed
Great career A.I you will be a champion in Philly,Denver,Detroit and Memphis always
AI is in denial:
“I always thought that when I left the game, it would be because I couldn’t help my team the way that I was accustomed to. However, that is not the case.”
Of course it’s the case. He’s not the player he once was. Why do you think he’s gone thru three teams in one year. And the last two wanted to use him off the bench.
But for Iverson, he has to start or he doesn’t want any part.
Ridiculous.
See Ya!
Thanks Allen for your hard work! It is a pity that the Memphis Grizzlies did not value your worth. So it’s time to begin again. One chapter closes another opens. Keep hope alive and live this chapter well!
KWIC
IT’S ABOUT TIME IVERSON HUNG IT UP. HIS STYLE OF SHOOT FIRST, SELFISH GUARD PLAY THANKFULLY HAS LOST A HOME IN THE NBA.

Steve, your thoughts?
You belong with the Knicks.
Keep your training up and let it be know that you desire the big apple, and it will happen.
The knicks need your lve of the game, skills and leave it all on the floor attitude this year as they train for the coming of Lebron….and next year Lebron needs you as his right hand in the gunfights.
You are one of the best in the game and I hope to be watching you for many years to come….In Orange and blue.
Can that retirement talk…..go media blitz on the New York Knicks and wake them the hell up!!!…. out of thier deeeeppppp sleep.
A.I. Much love my man.. you ended your response thanking the philly fans.. that brought tears to my eyes.. you will be missed and i hope,, maybe there will be a chance Ed will give u a shot to end your career here in philly. Much love A.I.
AI…im a die hard laker fan…but also a fan of basketball in its entirety…but AI it seems like you’re allowing these people to run you away from the game…DON’T DO IT MAN…you said it yourself you still to me are one of the top 5 guards in the league…people or the NBA never dug your style but you have fans of your great skills that want to see you play…if you have to take a lesser roll to get back to the top then do it…DON’T QUIT CAUSE THAT’S WHAT YOU’RE DOING IF YOU RETIRE…THINK BEFORE YOU ACT AI…
You the man God Bless You! Thanks for playing your heart out and playing hard and bringing it every night. I personally enjoyed watching you in College and just to let you know that you inspire us smaller ball players. You played the game as if you were bigger physically that what you actually were! Thanks AI God Bless…
Wow, thought we wouldnt see this statement for a while. But much respect to the Answer as I knew him growing up, for praying about it and accepting the decision God put in his heart. Takes a man to do that. As much as it upset some people to see Jordan come back on the wizards, he too did it his way and didnt have that magical ending to his final season. But its not what we want, its what God wants for us. Hopefully Allen can spread Gods’ Word to all his / hoop fans cause that is what the world and especially our youth need; and coming from an icon like AI that could do a lot. -God Bless-
Shame that he couldn’t get back on the court. Is a starting spot really that important to cost you millions???
This is another shot that is heard around the world…this day November 25, 2009, just like June 25, 2009, and September 11, 2001 will be a date that I will never forget. When I first took notice of Allen Iverson was when he first came into the league in 1996, my son at the time was 5 years old, he started idolizing Allen Iverson. Now my son is 17 years old and he immulates Allen Iverson. Wow! Who would have thought it would end like this. Man,I’m lost for words….
You are a liar. AI is not retiring.
Fuck you
It’s been a pleasure watching one of the greatest warriors to ever lace up a pair of basketball sneakers !! In my book along with I. Thomas, N. Archebald, and C. Murphy he is one the greatest little men the game has ever known.
God Bless You A.I.
Allen Iverson, you have always been a class act. I have followed your basketball career since your days at Bethel. I have enjoyed watching you play and the energy and effort with which you put forth. I want to thank you for the time you shared with us and I hope this retirement is short lived because I know you have plenty left to give.
I have come to know and love AI over the years. Living in Jersey during his Sixer years, I saw him grow as a person. He became a man on the court. He started out rough, but he grew. From someone who loves the game, He leaves it all on the floor. At his size, he should not be bringing it like that. But, that is A.I.
VOTE FOR IVERSON FOR THE ALL STAR TO HAVE A RETIREMENT AS THEY DESERVE. A FAN FROM SPAIN
VOTE TO IVERSON FOR THE ALL STAR TO GET RETIREMENT AS DESERVE. A FAN FROM SPAIN.
It hurts in a way to read that my basketball idol is considering stepping away from the NBA. I personally have been a fan since the solo year at G-Town. I remember being in the 8th grade engaging in heavy debates on who had the crossover that looked most like his.
I know Iverson still can be just as dominate as he was in 2001… I can also understand his situation… So even though it hurts to hear this… I’ll always keep “The Answer” fresh in my head… Cause his style changed the way I personally played the game myself…
Thanks Iverson for all the memories, Highlights, Contributions, and Legacy to have graced yor true fans with. I’ll be telling my 2 little boys about the greatest player I’ve ever had the pleasure of watching.
C.Johnson
AI…the best to ever do it!
Your dedication and work ethic is something that will inspire me forever.
So, Thank YOU

Thanks A.I. for all the memories!
Its a shame that you were outcasted by the powers that be in the media, much like stephon marbury.
This is the end of scoring point guards era. No matter what they labelled you, you are always a point guard in my book.
Thank you for a wonderful HOF career and am glad to have watched you play live.
-Just another AI fan
Naw Dog u can’t go out like this. i to share ur pain some times it’s better to retreat than surrender, but not in ur world, even though we come from the same, mines is different. if anywhere u should go is L.A, Orlando. or even miami. those teams teams right there u have 2 put ur pride and ego aside to contribute and will be a ring 4 real and will silence the haters thats the love 4 the Game and ur Fans don’t think b 4 u react this is what they want don’t give it 2 them if not 4 ur Fans, if not 4 the NBA, do it 4 ur Family!
Say it ain’t so A.I. Just like you said MJ, Bird and Johnson gave you the vision, you gave me the desire to be willing to compete at the highest level, even if it was in pick up games. I’m sure I’m not the only one who thinks this but I wish you would’ve retired in a Sixers uniform. One Love.
Sad to hear this, but thankful to have been able to watch AI for all these years. Congratulations on all your accomplishments AI, and we’ll see you soon. Maybe in the booth?
Couldn’t of said it any better. Thanks for all the great memories. The NBA has lost an amazing player. But has gained a legend. Pound for pound best scorer in the history of the game, PERIOD. Thanks A.I. we will miss you…
This is a sad day for me. I have been an Iverson fan since his first year at Georgetown. Living in Syracuse, I loved the few oppertunities I got to see him. Once he got to Philly I made an anual Philly trip every year (for my birthday) to see Iverson and the Sixers. He has always represented my kind of people. One love Allen to you and your family. Thank you for the many memories.
We’re gonna miss that sick crossover, AI. All the best to you and your family! I’ll be glued to your press conference!
A player who bought about a deafening din to arena’s across the league now exists the stage in silence. It’s a sad end to an illustrious career and this Philly fan for one had hoped for more from AI.
I am saddened by the recent news that a player I grew to know and love (still do!) is retiring. I cannot be selfish nor angry. I should appreciate the time that I was blessed to see a wonderful player like Allen Iverson play. May GOD bless him and his family. I will still and always be a great fan. Everything happens for a reason beacuse it is GOD’s will and purpose. I hope A.I. takes this time to relax and reconnect with his wife and kids. If he ever decides to come back, I will still be a loyal fan. GOD bless you, your family and your future, Allen Iverson.
Thank you, AI.
Although I mostly follow the Cavs, for years now you have been my favorite NBA’r. It happened when you led our team in the Olmypics. You showed you were a true patriot, even though you and your teammates there got little credit. Later, you led the greatest comeback in an NBA all-star game I have ever seen. More than that, some of your interviews, particularly with Steven A, were the finest, truest, most straight-from-the-heart I ever heard.
I wish you all the best. If you get the chance to play again, and I believe you will, you will go on to further greatness. If that doesn’t happen, it doesn’t even matter; you’ve proved it already over and over, night in and night out. You’re a fine man and a great baller.
I’ll be crying while reading this message. I am a big fan of your. I will not watching the NBA again w/o you and/or until NBA can find someone will replace you.
God Bless.
I almost got tears in my eyes when I read the last part. Im a proud Philadelphian and I just wanna say thank YOU for everything A.I.! You are the most passionate player to play any professional sport ever in my opinion. You will be missed and here’s to a happy, successful retirement!
Damn, this is tough. AI’s my favorite player of all-time. I know a lotta people are gonna try and kick him while he’s down, and it’ll be up to just as many folks to remember his impact on the game of basketball. Outside of Jordan, he’s arguably the most influential player the league has ever seen, on-the-court, as well as off-the-court.
i love you allen iverson
ILOVEYOU ALLEN IVERSON
Thanks for the memories!
[...] Retires: Guard Announces Retirement, Report Says Stephen A. Smith’s web site reports that famed guard Allen Iverson will retire. According to Smith, Iverson’s statement begins [...]
Whether one was a fan or not, few could ever match the heart that he played with. As someone who loved to watch him play, it’s a shame that he never found a way to play without being “the man.” Still, in fairness to him, his game was all about creating shots for himself and he did that incredibly well. One of the toughest players in NBA history.
Stephen A.,
Great job for being on this story. I truly hope that “AI” will change his mind. It will be a sad day when AI’s “basketball voice” is no longer heard around the league.
I think AI would be so amazing in Cleveland or Boston. Can you imagine the possibilities of those “teams” with AI.
I sincerely wish AI blessings and hope he remembers his dreams. They still can come true!
NCCU forever and an AI fan,
amiles
Allen Iverson, you are my role model and i will miss you s much. i am a huge sixers fan and the minute i heard you got traded, my heart dropped. I love ya man. i hope all goes well.
P.S. i wouldnt mind you coming out of retirement and back on the sixers. ha
What an overrated loser (like Stephen A Smith). Iverson NEVER won a thing, never made his teammates better, and was known as a headache throughout the league. Waste of talent.
In 5 years we’ll be hearing that Iverson is bankrupt and looking to make a comeback. Mark my words! Hahaha.
great player with lots of to offer, too many expectations not satisfied
enjoy retirement
season ticket holder for 28 years in Philly.
Unbelievable 3rd paragraph.
it’s so sad to think that one of my fave players is hanging his jersey, knowing that he can still play. I bought a satellite just to watch NBA this year, to at least see the remaining player I admire the most. NBA will definitely different without ALLEN IVERSON. I will always watch ur DVD’s ,wear ur jersey number and always keep ur posters in my room.
I won’t forget that 2001 NBA Champioships, especially that jumper against tyron lue. Your determination and passion for the game is 2nd to none (maybe MJ). You’r a terrific athlete with a great talent.
God bless you and your family.
[...] don’t know what to make of Allen Iverson right now. He’s always been a unique personality; I never pretended to have a clue what he was thinking [...]
Typical Iverson. He had, yes had, so much talent, but never understood what it meant to be part of a team. He would occasionally say the right things, but consistently was a incredibly selfish player. He never understood the defensive liability he was, nor did he ever understand how to make his teammates better.
AI was the most exciting player I ever saw live, but he never learned how to be a real winner. Larry Brown tried. It’s a shame AI didn’t truly show him the respect he deserved.
TK
Allen you had a great career!
A.I.
i hate to see you go like this…but I guess maybe it was for the best…I sure wish you would have got a ring b4 you left the game..keep ur head up I will see you when I watch you b Inducted in the NBA HALL OF FAME…GOD BLESS
Good luck A.I. in your future! You will be GREATLY missed! I hope to see you soon back on the court soon, but if this is it, then God bless you! I know that you will be successful in anything that you choose to pursue! Thanks for all the memories!
stephen a u suck
As a native of Philadelphia, Allen Iverson was the heart and soul of the Philadelphia 76ers every night he took the court. He has been misrepresented in the media to the point, the masses have started to believe the hype( not a team player, has lost a step, a cancer to the team).
Where are the journalist with intergrity that were taught in school to be objective? Allen Iverson played hard every night for the benefit of his team period. Did he mistakes off the court? Yes, but so has many other great NBA players (Kobe, Worthy, Barkley, Magic, Jordan, ect…)
As a ten-time all star, does he deserve the treatment he’s been getting? No!!!
Iverson can still start in the NBA. No disrespect to Mike Conley, but c’mon. That’s like asking Jordan to come off the bench behind Ron Harper. Ron had talent, but that would be absurd. Even if Jordan was coming back from an injury. Hopefully the players union, will step in and stand up for such a blatant injustice and character assassination. Love and respect to Bubba Chuck. Hopefully this isn’t the end!!
-Hakim (West Philly)
A.I. this is sad. Because of the economic downturn everyone has taken the opportunity to alter the structure of teams. A.I. is one of the top 10 NBA players of all time. If you are reading this Allen, don’t worry you are already immortalized in my upcoming book.
Respect,
MG

Come on A.I….It’s sad that he is not humble enough to accept a lesser roll on a contender in an effort to seal his hall of fame career with a ring! This is a vivid example the me first attitude hindering a legacy. He needs to go ahead and head to Cleveland where he can be the #1 scorer off the bench cuz LB needs some help scoring and we all know A.I. don’t mind shooting! just my thoughts…
What a tragic loss for the current state of basketball. We’ve all seen AI recenty, and the NBA should be ashmed to let this tale get an taller. Reggie from Southern Cali. Somebody needs a guard, I know my fantasy team could use this one. We luv Allen.
P.S. As Ice Cube said in the movie Friday to Smokey, “HEY,……COME BACK…..LOL
truly the best little man in the nba. I remember first watchin ai against t-mac when he was in orlando. two amazing players and i think it is an absolute disgrace no team is giving this man a business. A.I yu will be always remembered and thanks for 14 great nba seasons. The first 2 ball players i knew were iverson and mcgrady…. Congrats on a great career… also shout out to stephen a. an amazing reporter. p.s can u please come with a podcast that can touch a bit on t-macs return as i just can’t wait for him to come back. thanks.. Iverson good luck in the future!!!!!!!!
Thank you for coming to Memphis. I was very disapointed in your leaving but remain a fan. I wish things had turned out differently. I truly understand your opinion. You were and are better than any of the guards on the roster for the Grizzlies. Whatever was and is in the Coach mind, who knows, In my opinion he is wrong. He is full of himself. What ever the problem. it cost us the opportunity of seeing you on the court live and upclose. Best wishes to you and Blessing to you and your family. I read that Coach Karl hopes to cross paths with you, You need to make this happen. Peace and Love and true Fan.

Allen thank you for all the excitement and energy you brought to the floor every night. I live in Philly and you’ve done more for this city than any other individual athlete in my era. No one went after the ball like you. Don’t know how many times you went all out knowing you were gonna hit the floor or bang with the big fellas. You played hurt and played with your heart. Thank you for not being afraid to show your emotions and your love for the game. You are The Truth! You will be missed but we’ll see you in the Hall of Fame. Peace.
I would like to say how upset i am, because my favorite player is retiring. Everybody is saying he’s one of the best little guards to play the game. I think when you mention some of the best guard of all time you have to mention Iverson despite not having a ring. He is the only player in NBA history to lead the league in steals 3 consecutive seasons. He is the only rookie in NBA history to score 40 plus points in 5 consecutive games. The record for most steals in a playoff game, the 6th best career scoring average in history, and the 2nd best playoff career scoring average. Dominique Wilkins is considered one of the best forwards of all time despite never making it to the finals, so why shouldn’t Iverson be considered one of the best guards of all time. he definitely a hall of famer, but he should also go down as one of the top 50 players of all-time. He’s one of 4 players with at least 4 scoring titles for god sake(MJ,Wilt, and the Iceman). Thhe game of basketball will not be the same without The Answer. Congrats on a great career.
I love you Allen. You’re my favorite player of all time. Thank you for your career.

I am greatly saddened by the treatment of my “man”, AI. I grew up playing ball in Harlem in the 60’s and I have seen and played with some great players. Allen Iverson is one of the greatest guards that I ever saw. Dave Bing was another. I have followed Allen from the bowling alley bs and his shameful incarceration. It pained me to see a young man go through that crap. I am glad that he went to John Thompson (G’town). I still want this Hall of Famer to play. He still has plenty of game. You try to check him. If he doesn’t play again, Thanks for the memories! The NY Knicks are the dumbest organization that I ever saw. They need AI. You know how smart they are when they passed on Brandon Jennings. There is an old element trying to still run the NBA who don’t know their ass from their elbow but don’t want to let go. I hope that Allen gets to play again on his own terms. May the Creator bless him and his family.
Peace and Love Always
Walter McCottrie
[...] After a short stint with the Memphis Grizzlies with no team looking to sign him in the near future, it looks like Allen Iverson is hanging it up. AI confirmed he will retire from the NBA after 13+ seasons on Stephen A. Smith’s blog Stephena.com [...]
Hey Allen Iverson, by the way (I am the one who left the very first comment here on this page for your announcement), check out if you didn’t that I’m in New York. Don’t give up on New York if they come calling, as you can see you have huge fans here. Jamal Mashburn just said that “Allen Iverson has not lost a step”, he was saying he didn’t see that, like some media is saying. However, dumb guy Ric Bucher says that AI is good but he might not be great now so teams don’t want to deal with it. Now can someone tell me, who’s opinion would you rather agree with– a dumb idiotic member of the media who is always bashing on players he dislikes–or–a a former NBA player, mind you, who was an all-star and a prolific scorer, he was an all-around player able to average 20+ ppg, 6+ rbg, and 4+ apg; Jamal Mashburn…(oh and by the way, Jalen Rose had similar thoughts).
My point is people, stop listening to the media, and understand what the real intellects say, such as Chris Webber, Kenny Smith, a Suns commentator and more who have in recent times claimed Allen Iverson is the best scorer in the NBA…listen to a guy like Jamal Mashburn who said Allen Iverson has not lost a step…or Bill Walton, etc.
A.I can still play the game of basketball but like you got these white GM out there who is racial profiling against him because of who he is.Right now I’m watching the Orlando Magic and the Miami Heat.Allen Iverson can start for both of these team and make them better and a contender for a championship. This is really sad that Allen is at home watching this game and these teams haven’t called. But we all really know why because he is not a Good Old Boy and that’s what the NBA want.If your outspoken in the NBA or the NFL your a problem child.I hate to say this but guess who is next in this situation but from another sport is Terrell Owens.
@Walter McCottrie:
he can still play; I just wont believe that he is going to stay retired….i cant believe there isnt a coach out there that can find a way to use the talent of this mans basketball skill & knowledge
Allen you will get that itch to play again
WOW, A.I. WILL TRULY BE MISSED HOWEVER WE STILL HAVE ANOTHER #3 IN DWAYNE WADE TO CARRY THE TOURCH. LAY BACK IN YOUR LAZYBOY AND RECLINE, YOU DESERVE IT BIG HOMIE!!!!!!
TO MY FAVORITE PLAYER EVER, PEACE!
AI,
I was at Finals-Game 4 in Philly and argued with Eric Snow in the pre-game shoot-around. Almost got thrown out of the arena by the usher. I know you two are close and all of that, but if he could have hit jump shots in the game like he did in warmups, you just may have pulled off the upset of the century. I don’t know of any player that carried a team like you did in 01. Ever.
You raised your game considerably from G-town to the pros, and despite all of the heat, you Never sold out to the system. I love you for that! As the ’system’, far beyond the NBA execs, and its controllers is far more evil than the public knows…
Never after Jordan had I followed a player and his highlights like when you were on the floor. As a small guy, it was magical. Dunking and fadeaways are always momentous, but many don’t appreciate the finesse involved in small guard domination.
I knew from the crossover highlights showcased from high-school that you were going to be a major star. I even told my classmates my HS Senior Year. “Watch out for G-Town. They have a nasty new point guard.”
You played one note and played it like Mozart. Though not the easiest chord for the orchestra to play a symphony with, it was always an epic moment when you composed the symphony.
The NBA will forever miss your supernova talent.
Much Love,
Dante Caesar
P.S
Stephen A…Love Your Style. Love Your Analysis. But don’t scoff at Van Jones on account of 9-11. Disney writes your paycheck, but the powers at be have NO ANSWER for how Building 7 came down, nor the lack of debris at the Pentagon & Shankesville… as well a million other questions that millions of Americans have regarding that fateful day.

I know you can get a championship man don’t leave now..
A.I., aka Mr. Iverson: You will also be among the greatest to have emerged from the NBA. Perhaps the best at your position! You were and always will be one of my favorites. I will have fond memories of the skill and excitement, the determination and attitude you brought to the game. Even though you did not win a NBA Champion…for me YOU are a Champion, always was and always will be. Ultimate respect and best wishes! — A.C.
Allen Iverson
Man AI your still a gun, and you do have alot to offer, how can an allstar from last year retire playing only 3 games makes me sick
Stephen A., I regret to hear that AI is leaving the game, I truly believe that he was is still is one of the best to ever grace the sport. I hope he will reconsider, but if not may the Lord bless him in his retirement.
Your Fan Forever,
Odetheia

I’m very shcked about it. my first loved nba’s star after Jordan’s retirement. From Italy with love. thanks AI!
I still do not understand why AI refused to play a supporting role on a championship contender. Iverson has already won every individual accolade and award in the NBA. The only thing left was to win a ring. He could have achieved it if he subordinated his ego. I love AI but he is not the superstar he used to be. He is no longer a starter in a position to demand major minutes. Gary Payton is a future 1st ballot Hall of Famer. He finally won a championship with the Celtics. As an aging player, Payton understood he had to be a role player coming off the bench. It is sad that AI remains delusional about his current status in the NBA.
come to OKC!!!!
While serving my country in Va. I worked out all the time at Langely AFB and ran across a skinny kid dunking and playing with grown men. At the time he was maybe 16, and I have watched and rooted for him since.
What is going on with him is ridiculous. AI is not a suck up and is penalized for it. I will never believe that Steve Nash, Jason Kidd and Jason Williams are better than AI. As Stephen A. says plllllleeeeeaaaazzzz.
AI is still the man and be anxious for nothing, God has you.
No this cant be it
AI,
Thank you for your passion, love of the game and for leaving it all on the court.
A virtually lifelong Celtics fan from Boston, I became a Sixers season ticket holder your rookie year and kept the seats(a row in front of Que Gaskins)until you left.
We greatly enjoyed watching you play and wish you all the best.

Thank you AI!
I support AI from day1!
I am so sorry to hear about that and I can feel how hard AI made this decision.
I plan to go to the states for 8 years, I make it this semister finally and I become an exchange student! My dream is watching any games of AI. Now, My dream may not be come true, but I will still support AI forever and AI is the best in my heart!

I play basketball because of AI!
I know about and love Hip Hop because of AI!
AI is part of my life!
I do respect of all of his decision!
He is a great guy in da world!
I love AI not just only he is a player, when he is playing on the court. I love everything of him!
So much love from Hong Kong!
AI, you are da best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As an NBA fan from China, AI showed me the passion and the love of all stuff that about basketball.I watched his games since I was a junior high and started to play basketball. The inspiration of never giving up and being what I am encourage me all the days. For about ten years, from a kid to a adult, it’s time to take the responsibility of my own life. He retires, my youth days retires.
@Daniel K. BX NY 6:41 pm 11.25,2009: I totally agree with you!!!

I think Allen Iverson still has it and he will come back if he gets a chance with a good team. Allen Iverson is a good team player i would love the chance to get to meet him.Allen has scored over 24,000 points in his career and averages 27 points per game. That is exceptionally good for being in the NBA for 13 years.I hate to see this happen to such a great player.I hope a team will call him up to make an addition to their team.

AI, I will miss you, but life can only get better. I’ve been on this journey with you and while this chapter may come to an end there are so many chapters in your life that need to be written. Luv Ya Always, Black Women in Sports!
I will miss A.I a great deal and I have always been a fan of yours. I sorry that the media feel like your personal life and trial outside the game is news. I wish they and all other fans of you as a player, look at your career as a blessing to witness. Your are and will always be one of the greatest to have ever touch a basketball. Keep you head up, your still “The Answer” and the league just forgot because it is finally full of superstars again (although you held us down until they came to help you keep the league interesting) and your family and friends know the man you are. At the end of everyone’s career they realize that is all that truely matter’s and I hope you have as well, God bless.
Bubba Chuck!! Say it aint so!!! I felt for you when you had to sit behind Conley. The Knicks did show true class when they stated they had some interest. Good thing you did not go there. They would have put your career in limbo as they did Marbury and Rod Strickland. Stay in shape! Someone will come a calling soon….
It’s a tragedy to me that you leave.

Why do I have a feeling that AI is really not done yet

From SAS: Because he’s not, Sam. I don’t believe it for one second. He’ll be back.
That’s what you called a ‘POLITICAL SIDE OF NBA’
and it hits Iverson a lot. Teams misunderstood him and afraid that AI could add more on his resume. and somewhat you called ‘Crab Mentality’. They’ll bring AI down as long as they could.
very sad. To AI, don’t retire. show them. don’t lose hope.
For me,
Basketball = AI
No AI = No Basketball
AI Allah has stored something better for u………….dnt worry ma brother to us(fans) u still da champ and we love u to da fullest… and god willing i knw u’ll be back for contending team, and yes u will start, and yes u will win a championship and guess wat u will be da finals mvp…..

I believe he will come back.
I hope he can go to the celtics and win the championship, but these may be my best wishes.
@mrmr201: you’re right, he wrote it.
Incredibly sad news. Allen if you are reading this, thank you for being the most inspirational, hard-working, exciting & entertaining player ever to play on the hardwood. To watch your amazing dedication & skill on the court, such as your famous crossover, was magical & highly inspirational so thanks for giving us all the opportunity to witness a 6ft point guard make NBA history. Despite all the on-court & personal controversies, Allen you still stayed true to the game & didn’t lose heart. So all the way from Australia, I sincerely wish you all the best in your retirement, but as of today the game has lost a legend.
Thank you Allen “The Answer” Iverson

listen iverson…. i dont know whats going on in your mind right now, but i wanted you to know that its wrong… im sure spending time with your family and kids would be nice, but i mean, come on… millions of fans want to see you play again. lets say you come of the bench for a whole season, and you prove that you are really good. you know it will happen faster than you imagine, you will be a starter if you are good, and the media will come back to you, and praise you and you will laugh at what happened. so gather yourself and your emotions, throw away your hurt feelings, and get out there. in a year, the magic will come back. hope you are reading this, and if you are…. please come back. not just for me but for millions of other people.
Congrats Steve you got the news first , well deserved -been a fan since you Inquirer days .. I’m speechless right now …

From SAS: Don’t be, Chyna. I don’t believe for one second he’s staying retired. Whether this season or the next, he will return. Count on it.
Stephen A, Allen “Bubbachuck” Iverson will surely be missed from the game. Today is a sad day for sports, more importantly, for the NBA & the game of basketball. The man is an icon & a significant legend of the game of basketball…he is my #1 athlete of all times, period. I was a fan of his when he was here in Philly, and have wished him and is family the best, wherever he’s been since then. I always thought that playing for the Detroit Pistons was not good form him and his family. That was a down point in his career. However, I believe that he still has what it takes to assist a team in winning a NBA championship. No, he is not washed up and should not come off the NBA bench unless he feels that it would be in his best interests first. Best wishes to Mr. Allen Iverson and the Iverson family. He has my vote to be on the top echeleon list of MVP athlete legends to have ever grace sports in the United States & beyond.
Allen,
I have watched your career since you were at Georgetown and have been inspired by your talent, heart and courage. I grew up in Syracuse, and rooted against you in person in the Carrier Dome. I am not a Sixers fan, or really a fan of any team you have played for except the Olympic team. While I was disappointed that you guys were unable to bring home the gold in 2004, it was your reaction to the loss that helped me put it into perspective. Your classy reaction to the whole thing (while some of your teammates were whining, complaining and acting like divas) will be a memory I never forget. Thank you for representing our country so well. To think that some idiots in the media and the establishment dared to suggest beforehand that you weren’t worthy of the honor of representing your country. Thank you so much for proving them all wrong (as usual) and always playing the game the way it should be played – with guts and emotion. God bless you and your family and good luck in retirement.
YO AI…. LOOK STOP PLAYING W YOUR FANS LIKE THIS…LOL WE DONT FIND THIS FUNNY AT ALL. ..LIKE U REALLY NOT GOING TO LEAVE LIKE THIS…. This makes me really sad before the WNBA Iverson encouraged me to keep the rock in my hand. He is very misunderstood and deserves a great team to accept him for him. He is a unique person and has showed us that for almost 14 seasons. He does things his way but they always get done. A great team is going to realize what he is and he will comeback and show us why we all stand by him peace and love Venus
Thank you for ‘01…and the memories
Its about time! He’s washed up… At his age and ignorance on his shoulder I’m glad he’s retiring. He’s no answer; he’s a problem.
He was a great player in his prime but he will be another great player with no RING!! Nobody wants him cause of his attitude.
He was a trend setter…and just like every trend it washes up and moves on. Good luck AI and it was nice seeing you play, but really who will actually miss you?
Im only 17 but I didn’t like sports tell I was around 13, only because of Allen iverson did I begin to. Watching him play got me through so much, it’s a shame no one would pick him up. It hurts me deeply to see him go like this. Allen your my hero please come back!
THANX FOR THE MEMORIES AND LIVIN UP TO THE NAME “THE ANSWER”. GOOD TO SEE HIM COME OUT OF GEORGETOWN A SENSATIONAL ROOKIE AND GROW TO THE PROFESSIONAL BASKETBALL LEGEND HE BECAME. I AGREE HE SHOULD NOT COME OFF THE BENCH AND SUB FOR ANYONE IN THE GAME, (SORRY RIP HAMILTON). ALSO KNICKS WERE WRONG FOR NOT SIGNING HIM FOR THE REST OF HIS CAREER. HE WILL BE MISSED!!!!
love you forever, AI
A.I. I will miss you…I will always love you!!!

Allen Iverson is a LOSER and a crybaby.
He betrayed the league that made him famous and wealthy.
He’s a jerkbait that played for himself and ONLY for himself. Basketball, and the NBA were never important to him. ONLY he was important. When he was no longer a factor, he QUIT!!! See ya later, Allen.
AI, please come back…Millions youth and adults in China like me,become crazy about basketball because of you, like NBA game because of you. I even fell in love with Philadelphia because of you. Come back,AI…
NBA=Nothing But AI
I’ve watched this special athlete do things on the court that awed me, annoyed me, as well as stirred feelings of authentic sorrow for the two guard who had the assignment of having to “d” this man up in a game. If only I had a penny for each time this man broke someone’s ankles….Powerball would seem like chump change.
Allen Iverson was that tour de force, was that enigma, was that strong will player, was that answer some years, that big distraction other moments, was that uncompromising, selfish, fearless and unyielding figure; was that “individual force”, the dominator of teams, was that alienator as well as marginalizer of team mates.
People loved to hate him-spectators, analysts and oppossing competitors-but respect for this athlete, I belive, has never been in question.
My gut tells me he’ll be back sooner oppposed to later.
OHHHhhhhhhhhh PLease…………. AI did not even write this bull crap.
Allen, you know, you are one of the best player in NBA,
Such a shame that you leave.T.T
be happy.
we love you.
forever
Allen,
You are pound-for-pound, inch for inch, the most talented basketball player the NBA has ever seen. You fought titans and many times prevailed, and you did it with heart, spirit, your own brand of genius, and, yes, character. Larry Brown would not love you the way he does if you didn’t have character.
If MJ can try pro baseball, then you can try pro football. Go sign with an NFL team and get some playing time. If you can pull it off, then you working your magic in an NFL uniform will be one of the greatest feats and stories in sports history. If not, so what? Everybody forgave MJ, and they’ll forgive you too–and appreciate your heart for trying.
Lots of criticisms can be made of your career, and as you know deep down, lots of them will be valid. But no one who knows the game and has a heart themselves will EVER dispute your heart. You have the heart of a lion and the passion of a great artist, and like Federer, Woods and Jordan, you are like a Picasso of sport, a virtuoso.
So play on little big man. And you play until YOU’RE done, not until somebody through their ignorance and envy tries to TELL you you’re done. You can join a pro hopscotch league for all I care–and I’ll become an INSTANT fan of hopscotch. This world needs more athletes like you.
Why are there comments here to criticize AI? If anyone of you really knew the game of Basket Ball you wouldn’t be talking about Iverson in a negative light:
He took Philly to the NBA finals (by himself) so as far as being able, no one should question that.
So for you haters who complain about his not wanting to come off the bench?
That actually makes perfect sense: he should not come off the bench! When you watch him play in his last games, he’s still leaving folks behind him: so unless you’re in the league doin’it you guys need to shut up.
Ego? You guys wanna talk about ego: you don’t understand that ALL great players have huge ego and that’s what makes them winners, exactly. Winners always have big egos (Jordan? Magic? Bill Russell?), losers don’t have ANY EGO and that’s why they are losers (like the NETS, KNICKS, CLIPPERS, MINNESOTA and the list goes on).
And to think these sorry teams dare to ignore Iverson free in the market: this is absolutely ridiculous.
Iverson shouldn’t come off the bench for some stuckey or other sorry “fake *SS pro-ballers”, is this the end of the world or what?
Would Kobe, Melo, Wade, James, Nash or even Jason Kidd come off the bench in today’s game? HELL NO!! And except for Kobe and Wade none of these guys even have a title…so these journalists and analysts blaming AI for not wanting to come off the bench don’t know what the heck they’re talking about…neither do these dumb fans talking about some “AI is selfish, he should put his ego aside”.
If that’s what he wants then he should get it, he is the one playing and scoring all these points NOT YOU so he has the right to say that he WANTS TO PLAY. Who are you? the fan? to sit there and ask of the player to not worry about being on the bench and asking him to PROVE HIMSELF?
Frankly, I don’t any better scoring guard than AI in the league right now. I mean there are some great guards but I don’t see a problem with them coming off the bench for AI: none of them have FOUR SCORING TITLES (my goodness).
The man has FOUR SCORING TITLES, MVPs, WENT TO THE FINALS…when was the last time one of you sorry fans took ANY team to the NBA FINALS.
At this point, I think he’s even better off leaving the league because they are sooo fake to do him like that.
NBA executives don’t respect AI and that’s why nobody signed him up…there are soo many sorry players in the NBA nowadays, it makes me sick (guys shooting airball on a regular basis, can’t make a lay up, can’t shoot, can’t rebound) I mean it is pretty scary and they dare act funny with AI. It’s just ridiculous.
AI, don’t listen to these haters in and outside of the NBA cuz they don’t know any better or if they do, they act like they don’t. You go ahead and enjoy your retirement with your family: you can start your own league or a lucrative business!
Stephen A, thanks for publishing AI retirement annoucement.
AI, one of the realest and most talented NBA players at six feet tall went against the giants of the NBA: he is a real giant at heart!
AI brought the tatts and the cool hair that EVERYONE in the NBA rocks now! He is the coolest NBA player ever, my only regret is that he didn’t get a NBA title.
But that’s ok, NBA 50 greatest!

I never thought id see the day…wow. AI i still got love for you…ill always be an AI fan. He did his thing on the court. God Bless him on his new endeavors.
I have been an AI fan and regular at his games since his time with Tony as a Bruin. At 6′0, at best, Allen has consistently lit up every team and player he has ever faced. First ballot Hall of Famer, of course, he still has it and I hope that he gets the chance to win a title with the right team. I still remember Rutland throwing him the lob from half court. Thanks for the memories and the possibility of more.
AI you got shafted. No team will ever sign and make Steve Nash or Jason Kidd come off the bench no matter how old and dinosauric they are.
@Daniel K. BX NY 6:41 pm 11.25,2009: Daniel,I can not stopping crying, even when I am typing now. I come from China and AI is one of the reason I come to America, but when I just got here, with eager to see him play on the court,he decided to leave…I love him, and I believe I understand him too. Your words move me.Could you please contact with me? I really feel we can share much about AI…Email:hasayake99@sina.com… Best Wishes for you. Love AI forever.
I want to thank Mr. Iverson for all the great memories he has left basketball fans with. From his incredible rookie year to his “Practice” speech and great years in Philadelphia, it was a privilege to watch him play the game. Many people viewed him as a troublemaker and interference with the game but those people couldnt have been more wrong, as Allen was one of the reasons the NBA got through the tough times it had. Every sport has that one player that doesnt follow every rule to a T and doesnt go out of their way to be politically correct in every post-game interview and Allen was that player for the NBA and contributed so much to the game we all love. There is no doubt that he can still compete at the highest level, but as he said, there are some things that are just more important than basketball. Thanks for all the memories Allen and I wish you and your family the best of luck in the future.
…….
im never forget U.
i want 2 cry when i read his message`. i dunno why but for me allen iverson is still # 1`.since his 1st come 2 nba he was my idol in nba`.i copied all of his move, dribbling skill and lay up’s`.and for me 2 see him off on the court`.i’m so sad for that`.but a.i. is ryt he recieves his best blessing`.GOD BLESS A.I.

u r the only idol of mine in NBA.
I though that i could have a chance to usa to watch u at games.
I dont want that just could be a dream.
luv u so.
First and foremost a big fan of yours. I love the nba and your analysis of it. I have been reading and listening to different takes on the Iverson situation and it seems that there is a divide between how the players view him and non players view him. Alot of the players seem to side with Iverson and think he should still be in the league and I’ve heard Jalen Rose, and Jamal Mashburn say ,” Other players do that too.” ( Refering to his anti team antics) What we havent heard is Joe Dumars, Larry Brown and others come to the forefront and give thier take on the situation. I’m not an expert like you, but I’m assuming the NBA , like any other business work the same. I’m sure other gms called around and talked to his former employers and asked if he was worth the risk. One thing that I haven’t heard anyone mention is this,: Whether you’re running a buisness or trying to build a championship team, there comes a point when everyone on the team accepts their role, and says, ” I’m going to do the best I can of what’s asked of me.” Does everyone forget that last year in Detroit , Iverson said that he’d rather quit then come off the bench? He completely disrespected Joe D and the management team there. WHy don’t the players ever bring this up? Whatever business you run or team you have , you cannot have this kind of divicivness. No one is questioning his heart or ability, just his immaturity and lack of leadership. It’s sad to see him go, but even sadder for people to make excuses for him. Let’s look at the facts, within just one week of the season, he publicly critized his playing time. He came out and said he was better the Mike Conley, who is new in the league and trying to develop his own identity. Regardless of whether you believe that’s true or not you can’t come out publicly and say that. It’s not the way to handle the situation and its not fair to MIke Conley and it speaks to his immaturity. What’s you take on the situation? If you were a GM would you take a chance on Iverson?
Allen Iverson. My favorite basketball player of all time since I can remember. The NBA will not be the same without you! Much loveee

@Hip Hop Ida(Hong Kong): I want to say the exactly same word as you…I can from mainland China and now the graduate student here.AI is the reason for me to love basketball, watch NBA, and one of the reasons I aim to come to the US. But when I got quite near to him, he decided to leave.I didn’t see him play on the court, even only once… Email me if you would like to share the same feeling about AI, who is also one part of my life…hasayake99@sina.com Best wishes for you. Love AI FOREVER.
For now I’m saddened that the man who I rooted for my whole life is being shown the back door. From the time he was a Hoya, to dazzling us in his rookie season crossing up MJ, to when he was winning the MVP making his lone run at the Finals, A.I.’s career is worthy of much higher regard. He’s being pushed out of a league that is becoming more and more conservative by the day and that loved to falsely label him an unwilling, un-bending troublemaker.
A.I.’s poster hung on my wall while I was chasing hoop dreams throughout middle and high school and no one symbolized my struggles and generation more than him. He deserved to go out on his own terms and was thee best little guard ever to lace em’ up. Helping revolutionize ball handling and putting up awe inspiring numbers all while maintaining his status as a sturdy iron man who rarely was injured, few were in his class in terms of skill or will. The NBA has blackballed him out of one final run and it’s appalling…
I do think there is some glimmer of hope that maybe his retirement will be short lived. That last sentence in his statement certainly indicates that, but if in fact he’s hanging up his Reebok’s for good I just wanna say this….Thanks for the memories A.I., you were the greatest, the most misunderstood and the illest all at once…see you in Springfield in five.
[...] “The Official Site Of Stephen A Smith“ has posted what is allegedly a goodbye from NBA All-Star Allen Iverson to the fans announcing his retirement from the NBA. Glad your gone AI.. join the others like Isiah Thomas who are now nobodies because they thought as individuals, they were bigger than the coach and the entire team!
Stay retired. The NBA is better without your kind!
I dont know think you should quit yet.
You still have the “GAME”, the “GAME”.
I watched all of your games including in Memphis uniform.
You still have the dribble and shots.
Why dont know you try one more year with Mavericks?
They need you 200%.
AI is the Answer for NBA.
It sucks not having you around NBA.
Hi, Allen, I’m from China, When I was a young boy, in every saturday night, we all expected to watch NBA game in my home, that’s really a nice time for us, especially, you are the special one in my mind, no, like a hero, please believe that a large number of Chinese people regard you as a hero in NBA ground! there is a saying in China” nobody doubted that you are a hero, only there are no more ground for the hero” god bless you!
People can have their opinions about his off-court behavior but one thing no one can argue he gave 100% when was on the court. Sad that he never got that number two guy that makes a great player a champion as in Pippin and Gasol. Yeah in Denver there was Mello but AI was the two guy there. Being 6′-1″ I tell my kids look this guy is shorter than me and he is an NBA great. Amazing that he being the shortest guy to win a scoring title and doing it three times, wow what a talent.

Allan Iversen is the purest form of a basketball player. He is one of the greatest players of all time. There is no more adjectives that need to be said about this man. I’ve watched him since his years at Georgetown. And if the game was televised that he was in, I watched the first.
I personally does not want him to end his career, not when he can play at the highest level. There’s more on him to see. And if you should decide to retire, I think he should have a fanfare like all of the great ones in basketball history.
AI,
it breaks my heart to see you leave this way. i may not be your biggest fan, but i have a lot of respect for you. i cannot even start to describe how you thrilled us with your on-court antics, and how you inspired us with your off-court challenges and successes. and please tell your mom how wonderfully she raised an amazing guy in your person.
i hope this ain’t final. i hope to see you again on an NBA uniform, doing that which you so love.
since i was a little girl anyone could ask me who my favorite player was and my answer without any hesitation would be Micheal Jordan but not two seconds behind that would i say Allen Iverson just as fast. no matter what problems AI had, i know he was an outstanding athlete. i also know the NBA will not be the same without him. i will never forget my first pair of basketball shoes…of course they just HAD to be AI’s…while the rest of the little girls had normal nikes to wear during the ball games, i had to wear my AI’s…while the rest of the little girls wanted barbies and such, AI got me so into basketball that i retired my barbies for those first bball shoes. allen iverson wasnt just another famous bball player to me, he along with MJ was my inspration for basketball i grew up watching and obsessing over his skills. i used to tell my mom all the time…”i wanna ball just like AI”. i remember being little and wearing a sleeve over my arm just to be like him. Allen Iverson will always be one of the biggest names in NBA history! whether he is retired for good or not…i know he will always have a true spot in the NBA world. and i am happy to say that he is the reason behind my basketball career and i owe it all to him and MJ for my love of the game!
I want you to know, AI, that you have been and will always be my basketball hero…you inspire me in so many ways, and I’ve always said that the saddest day will be when you finally leave the NBA. I’ll still be waiting to see you on the hardcourt again, but if that doesn’t happen, then I hope you see this and know that here’s yet another life you’ve touched by just being yourself and by playing the game you love. You are the best example of determination and passion, nobody else comes close. Basketball is the greatest thing in my life, and you’re one of the primary reasons why I keep at it, even when the going got tough. I thank you so much for that. God bless, AI.
Stephen A, thanks for being on the job as usual. Being good friends with AI, I’m sure it was quite a shock to hear this type of news. Its always a challenge for any prize fighter, any soldier, to leave the arena they champion. AI is no different. His heart/drive won’t let him stay down. I’m sure we haven’t seen the last of AI. The thing is, when he does come back, and with who he comes back to, it will be on HIS terms. Just like it always is.
Dear A.I. ,
It’s hard to express how I feel right now, after learning about your retirement.
I was never the type that looked up to celebrities, I never saw them differently than other people but you were sort of an exception. I always saw part of myself in you, in your attitude both on and off the court. Your toughness, inner-strength and heart are legendary and unquestionable. You are a role model to millions because of these qualities.
However, you never truly grew up, neither as a ball player nor as a person. You were blessed with tremendous talent, the opportunity to play college ball under a legendary coach in John Thompson at one of the best universities in the U.S. and you were also blessed to be picked no. 1 in the NBA draft; but you were never truly grateful for these opportunities! You never gave back man…You never saw the big picture and you never truly loved the game. Every missed shot that could have been an assist, every missed practice, every time you bitched like a spoiled kid when a coach took you out of the game… I always hoped this shit will stop and you would become a leader, a true role model. Instead you spat on the only hand that reached out to you this summer just because you couldn’t swallow your pride.
Four time scoring champion, MVP, Rookie of the Year, two time All-Star game MVP…do this titles mean anything without a ring? Will you ever feel accomplished as a ball player? You could say that players like Stockton, Ewing, Barkley, Reggie or Karl Malone never won a championship neither but none of those above could hold a candle to you. You should have been in the same ball park with the best of them, with the MJ’s, the Russel’s, the Magic’s…but you ended up being one of the biggest – if not THE BIGGEST – loser in NBA history. People will talk about you with regret….”if he would have…” he could have been…” “it’s a damn shame…”
And it is a damn shame ! For me, you’re the biggest disappointment, the biggest loser and the most immature player in league history. And to make things even worse, you quit on everybody who loved you and believed in you the first time the getting truly got tough !
It hurts to say this but you just don’t deserve to be a Hall of Famer !
I wish you all the best though !
AI, you will be back. Patience my man. Patience. If Jason Williams can be a force in Orlando, you certainly can continue to pull out that crossover-drive in a number of palaces around the league.
You are due at least a farewell tour. You have stayed true to the game. You have loved it; guaranteed it will love you back, no matter how badly the GMs are acting now. It would have been fun to have you in New York, but that would have been a big mistake. They are a managerial mess from the front office to the backcourt. You were saved.
The right opportunity is on it’s way. July 1, 2010 is not far off.
i have nothing to say…
have a good life!
DONT’T GO!A.I
You are my belief!AI,There’s no NBA for me without you!
Remember AI forever!
Best wish from China!
Good luck~~!
I will always love you I’m your Biggest Fan Ever, You have to do what you have to do for you, You will Definitely be Missed but Never Forgotten and No Matter what Anyone Says U Still and Will Always have that Swagger…One Love AI
The news hurts me badly…
I was,am,will be loving AI.
God bless you Allen Iverson. You have had a storied career. Your regret in life will be how your career ended. Hopefully, you may still have a chance to correct your legacy.

Allen, I know you’re reading every single one of these posts…it’s not like you don’t have time(: (I’m jus’ messin’ witchya soldier). My point is…that’s the kinda man you are. I personally know what it’s like being the independent minded, strong willed, misunderstood warrior, and I truly believe I know how you feel. Something about guys like us though…the race is not for the swift, but for those who can endure, and people like you always get their glory, right on time. Respect goes out to your ultimate current take on the situation. Family is key. C’mon man, you get to rest up with wifey and enjoy the young’ns. Allen, you’ve fought hard. There’s nothing wrong with letting the body rest a little. Not to mention the soul. As one earlier post stated, respect to the Knicks for entertaining the thought. NYC woulda been great, but not right for you right now. I’ve been marveling at the phenomenon that is THE ANSWER since Georgetown, and the word I thought of then, and now, is ELECTRIC! I know you’re still charged, but rejuice anyway (right?) I know we’ll see you in an NBA uniform soon. You clearly still got the itch bad. Bank this: You will get your NBA championship, soldier. Call it the psychic in me. Your heart is pure and and the divine who matters most, knows this. Looking forward to A.I. breaking some more NBA ankles. Peace ’til Lata soldier. If U wanna holler, U know wher’ I’m at. (mindofdemus.com).
Yo Stephen, U didn’t write back, don’t leave me hangin’ Bro(:
i would like for u to stay another year or two but do what you think is right for you
i will be a fan of you for now and ever
We love you AI
@Crystal: That’s the same thing they thought about Barry Sanders and we all can agree he retired too early. Allen Iverson ushered hip hop into the NBA. There would be no Lebron or Carmelo if there wasn’t an AI first. Don’t get me wrong other people were apart of hip hop but not like AI. AI had a thug persona and had a entourage that repped him to the fullest. He spoke his mind and hung out with hip hop’s elite, never thinking about his image. To back all that up the NBA started targeting his crossover and made the zone defense to stop AI from being so lethal. After J Will’s performance last night, I think Orlando could use a clutch guard. AI deserves a second chance at a winning team and he deserves a championship much like Barkley did. He is without a doubt the prequel to new guards like CP3 and Brandon Jennings. Anyone who thinks AI couldn’t score 20 plus consistently is fooling themselves. This is deeper than basketball. It’s definitely politics!

I’m sure he didn’t. Last time I checked, that’s why he’s got a manager and a publicist.
I will always remember Allen Iverson for one word PRATICE!
Im from spain, saw you a few days ago in badalona exhibition and i never thought this situation for this season. I think this is your decision men, but its not what your fans wishes, the fans of allen iverson is it because you always be a warrior, fighting versus all the adversities of the live, this spirit is what we love to you! and we want to see you retire with a great season played not now!, i understand the situation now is very dificult, any team has an offer for you, and this is the biggest adversitie in your carrer, and your reaction is go away, i dont know you! the real iverson would fight to reverse this situation and find a team and spend the last season for his fans, make an mvp all star game or something like that or win the nba i dont know…. you always say the sky is the limit….but it wasnt true, the iverson i knew in 2001 would play again, and would win again!….. But after all of this i want to thank you for give me an oportunity to see the best player in the world!
No!!!!
Somebody tell me that is not true…..
All that I want to say is thank you, AI.
Please stay in NBA!

There is no way that a guard of AI magnitude got to go out the game this way this is definately Political what he brought to the game he deserve more class then the way he being treated by the league right now he is one of the most explosive Guard in the business and I feel his talent is still there if he was to get the chance to showcase his talent like he can. there was no way in the world he should’ve been coming off the bench for the Grizzly Memphis there was no guard on that team better then AI so what was the reason they wanted him to come off the bench i can go on and on but i just want to wish AI the best and wish him and his Family well…..
Good for you AI. I’m tired of seeing players in all sports who stick around well past thier prime. Leaving while still on top of your game earns you more respect from me than all the scoring titles. GL to you
I am a huge Allen Iverson fan it just don’t seem right without him in the NBA. But i know Allen is not done because he loves the game and he will be back and ready to get him a nba championship because Allen Iverson is not a quitter. So Allen don’t go.

Make sure you retire in Philadelphia, where you truly deserve to be. (If infact you do retire)
Thanks for the many years of entertainment.

The Knicks and the Nets are the two worst teams in the NBA. Even they said no thanks to Allen Iverson. I love you AI but at this point in your career it is a YOU problem.
The best tweener to ever play the game, hands down….
Good luck and congratulations on an epic career Allen.
Your Sixer days will be long and fondly remembered here in Philly.
AI is one of the great players in basketball. It’s to bad that his big fat ego has ended his career prematurely. You could be like Jason Terry of the Dallas Mavericks..put your ego aside, come off the bench and STILL have a HUGE role on your team, but NO, you can’t do that. So instead you leave a legacy of one of the toughest little guys to ever play the game who threw it all away because you couldn’t get over yourself. What a shame.
Allen Iverson just practises retirement.
Believe me.
He’s gonna be back sumday.
and im oways here w8in 4 him.
and to watch the sun shine agn.
AI… Cultural icon black balled and misunderstood by supposedly genius men in suits. Management types still not sure how to handle stong personality types where cornrows, dew rags, and tatoos are involved.
Thanks AI for having such a strong personality and not being one of these “yes mastah” types. It’s a shame that your reluctance to trade in your neck tattoo demeanor for a neck tie demeanor (and not a lack of skills) ended your run as Best Competitor of All Time (any sport!).
All the best to you.
you were the reason little men like me gave it all fofr basketball, the game is gonna miss you.
He played the game like it’s his last. I have been A.I. fan since he was a freshman at Georgetown. I grew up in Delaware so I had the pleasure to watch his games. To this day I remember when my friend Kevin ask me had I watch Georgetown game yet and I said no, he said they have a point guard name Allen Iverson and the boy is bad. I was surprise because Georgetown is known from having great centers. When I did watch his game at Georgetown I fell in with his game. A.I. fears no one, and I remember he said, the only person that can stop A.I. is A.I. I believe he gave us a David versus Goliath atmosphere on the basketball court. I always wonder was I the only one that got his message from the interview of practice, practice, practice. What I got from it was his team just lost a playoff game and for him to do an interview and talk about practice but not the game he played, and with about 10 different injuries. I had the pleasure to watch A.I. play when he was at Denver. My heart is little saddened because as a fan I still want to see A.I. play. We all know he can still play with the best of them. The hip hop nation wants to thank A.I. for bringing us along with him. He did not change anyone and stay true to himself. When we were consider out cast he took us along with him. To your family from my family thank you for the wonderful years and happy holidays.
A.I., I don’t understand why no one is asking you to join their team; it makes no sense considering your extraordinary abiltiy on the court. As someone already commented, it seems political to me too (no, it is political). I hope you come back to the game you love.
Thank you, my friend, for the magnificent moments you displayed at the MCI Center (now Verizon Center) in DC. My family rarely missed a game when you came to town from Philly or Denver. Your level of play will surely be missed.
My youngest son (now 22 years old) fashioned his game after yours (as best he could
) when he was in middle school and high school. You are his role model on and off the court.
P.S.- I know Shaye who you went to high school with down in Hampton, VA.
아놔, 안되 – - ;
I will never watch NBA again!
Because you have left.
I love you for ever!

good riddance, self loving non team playing thats how I will remember him.
He’ll be back!
Ai says he loves the game. Why does he allow his ego to overrule his love for basketball? AI is an aging ballplayer but he can still be a productive performer in a supporting role. If he loves the game why did he choose early retirement?
Why are folks posting in Chinese? If this is a menu I’ll order the shrimp fried rice and a side order of short ribs.

I am touch to see a great player leave the game knowing that he still can compete at a highest level.
Thank you AI for all those years of good memories.
Good luck to you and your family.
THANK YOU!
Look, AI or Answer or whatever u call yourself. U are a helluva a player, but you kinda ruined my likeness of you with your selfishness.
Humility goes a long way. Who du you think you are dictating to owners and coaches that you don’t deserve to come off the bench.U waste a whole lotta shots, u ball-hug too damn much, u don’t like practicing, u walk around with a batallion of entourage BUT U CAN SURELY PLAY BASKETBALL. That I give u, but ur personality is what is not in demand in the locker room.
I wish u well cos ur a GREAT HALL OF FAME player but its a shame that ur personality seems to dominate ur game wherever u go unlike no other.
All the best men

Keep your panties on folks. Iverson retirement rumors are 100% bogus. AI is not retired. He aint done yet.
I am going to go out and say, I am one of your biggest fan, I can not tell u how many people I shouted down when it came to “The Answer!!!”. You are no doubt the hardest ball player in the GAME!!! I will always be a fan. Thank you for all the wonderful years from Georgetown to the present, you will surely be miss. I will tell you where ever u went I became that team fan, when you left I was no longer a fan of that team. I am sorry to hear you are leaving but you no in your heart what you can take can deal with, its sad you leaving with out a ring but no that your fans have the biggest ring for and from you around our heart. You will be miss AI aka The Answer!!! to whatever question needed..Stay at Peace and Happy Thanksgiving.
AI, you see, so many fans love you~~ you’re the best player and a hero in our hearts. this news is not surprise for me, but I still felt sad when I know it.. I hope you’ll be happy and doing what you love to do like you said.. If you still want to play basketball, why don’t you insist on it~~? Anyway, you were the guy that I fall in love at the first glance, I am your fan and love you forever.
a Chinese girl~
This can’t be possible. Allen Iverson can’t go out like this. This is not right. What is the NBA doing.
I have been down with Bubba Chuck which is his nickname that native VA people known him for. Ever since he was in highschool I knew he would be something special. When I moved to Norfolk,VA in 92 I use to hear about this guy named Allen Iverson nicknamed Bubba Chuck who stayed across the water and I was told he was a short man for basketball but he played like he was big like Shaq. I use to hear this man is so quick that you better not blink or you will miss him do something amazing. He was a heck of a quaterback too. It was a long time ago but I think he won the Highschool Football championship as well. If anybody is from VA here they will let you know those were the days and I am sad this man didn’t get a ring. But he still got love from me.
AI is right. If he plays, he should be starting. He’s one of the best players ever. But honestly, he let ego get in the way. If he stayed in Memphis he’d be the starting PG by now. In fact, the Grizz will probably trade Conley at some point – hence why they pick-up Tinsley. They already have a pretty steady backup in Williams. AI, if you’re listening (and i hope you are) your talent is amazing. No doubt. But what you have done to yourself and to your fans (like me) is total BS. You should go out on top, not like this.

AI you gotta play your role and prove em wrong. You not about winning first. You about busting your oppising players ass. Should be about busting the other Teams ass. Get it ?
Dear AI,
it’s hard to say what I feel right now. One of the Greatest is going to leave from the Game of Basketball. Just because of You I watched the NBA, started to play Basketball and developed the Love for the Game. I fulfilled one of my Lifetime-Dreams when I saw you playing live(NBA Europe Live Tour in Cologne 2006). But when I heard about your Intention, I couldn’t believe it. Is Allen Iverson really going to retire?
I hope not. I hope you will suit up your Sneakers again and run into Battle. As you always did. Fighting for a Championship. The Celtics, Lakers, Cavaliers or the Magic will call. They won’t fight for the Championship without you. Knowing that they will be better with You. And then you will answer th Call and show all Critics that you are THE ANSWER. And if not, enjoy your Retirement and your Time with your Family.
I wish you and your Family nothing but the Best and I hope that you won’t leave us on that Way. I really hope so.
Your biggest Fan from Germany.
Kevin W.
PS: I’m a PHILLY-FAN-FOR-LIFE and they will retire your number 3. Soon. See you in the HALL-OF-FAME: There’s where you belong.
@João da Paz: I love you !you are god with Philadelphia !

Allen use your pro to make some changes in Urban America…………
Love U forever, AI
I’m 10 years old, I’m french born in Haiti. Mister Allen Iverson gave me the passion of Basketball. I’m playing in a team since 5 years.
Please, don’t stop playing. You are the best in the world, I love your game, you are my model.
My dream : to see you playing on a floor.
Best regards
Sammy
thanks the great AI for the good memories……. we will miss you
Do as what you want!!!Support you forever!!!Allen Iverson
AI,if you can see all the statements here,i think you will know how deep the fans love is.
Once, MJ’s final retirement made me cried. Now, you are the one that who’s retirement can make me cry.
Thank you for the fantestic wonderful 13 NBA seasons. You are the only one next to MJ in my heart.
In all fans heart, you already get the Ring!
God blessing you.
Last:all fans hope you can come back, we will always love you wherever you are.we love all of you, whatever good or “bad” things.
AI I have watched you since Georgetown, I always loved your heart and passion for the game. You were truly a warrior, We as fans will miss you. This is not how you should go out. You will always be a champion, especially here in philly. I watched you bring a passion back to philly that had been lost for years your heart I belived inspired not only thei sixers, but the eagles, flyers and phillies. Thanks for everything you gave us.
PS I still think you will play again
If Allen wrotte this man than nba will start losing again. shame!
i will miss you AI #3………god bless!
Lou Williams out for 8 weeks in Philly, What better place of AI, Philly loves him, he loves Phlly, lets do this!!!!!
yeah, great player. i think he should agree coming off the bench, BUT, with a team with a champ caliber…. but with a team like grizzlies… giving him the starting role is not bad, they are a NOTHING TEAM and they should not experiment on him… if he goes to celtics or miami, he should be a 6th man… anyway what are these for? he just retired…
stop critisicing him. it’s useless
thanks AI…. you’re still the best
best wishes for your family

Is anyone buying this load of cr@p!? Allen cannot come to grips with the fact that NBA GMs no longer view him as a starting guard. He will not be offered a starting role and heavy minutes, not to mention the money that goes with it all. Iverson has a lot of pride, and understandably so. However, he apparently is not the same basketball player he used to be. Scouts & GMs have evaluated his skills as being a bench player. Can he still be productive? Yes. Can he still get to the basket & score? Yes. Just not the way he used to. “The Answer” needs to reevalute his game. Come off the bench for a team like the Celtics, Heat, or Cavaliers. Swallow your pride & get your ring my son.

I’ve watched my last regular season NBA game. AI was THEE only reason I watched “regular season” Basketball. Yeah, i’m back up on it come playoff time. But NO ONE else does it for me like AI. As a Sixers fan, I used to get goosebumps watching that guy. His energy was intense and his game was filthy. from 98 to 2007, i watched every Sixers game. From preseason to the playoffs and if I missed it live, i recorded it. That’s the passion that I have for this man as a player.
I read some sportswriter compare Brandon Jennings to AI. Much respect to BJ, but come on. What AI brought to the hardwood can NOT be duplicated. Brandon Jennings is a talent of his own. But don’t say he’s replacing AI!! Come ON Nah! The crossover. The drives to the paint. Living on the free throw line. The slam dunks in his first few seasons. The AI to Larry Hughes alley oops. The crossover, 3 point jumpshot, high step over tyronn lue. Never to be duplicated.
AI. It ain’t over. It can’t be. I’ll see you when you’re ready dog.
cw
@RJVera: You have no idea RJ. Leave this one alone. You did not know AI.
@David Sparks: He was only asking for the respect that other players of his stature gets. Nothing wrong with that. A man who doesnt’ stand for something will fall for anything.
@eyebleaf: shut the eff up. period.
SA, I will bust every ass on this post for messin with AI. That’s how down I am for this cat. I would bust a MOFO’s ass. period. They don’t know him like we do SA. That’s Bubbachuck. Jewels. This man would give his last bean to feed all you fools, and he would go hungry. That’s how big his heart is. You don’t know where this man came from. He came from nothing, so how can you threaten him with SOMEthing? And the same people who bitch about AI being immature or stating his case, are the same fools arguing with their manager because they wanna be on fries tonight. I was on register yesterday. Why can’t i do fried. Mikey always gets fries! Bustas.

ai .you’ve always been my inspiration! i cried for you! pray for you!
hey man, you gave the League a solid spirit, which made the league more successful, but now no one stand out to help you, everybody abort you, so you fight against the world in this way, though strengthless. God bless you and I love you, forever
Well I have been an Iverson supporter my entire life, through all his troubles and success. I too am sad to see him go, but there is indeed another Allen Iverson in the league now, as we speak. His name is Brandon Jennings. Also if you have tuned in to a Bobcats game, D.J Augustin is remarkably similar to Allen Iverson in his glory days. There may not be another Michael Jordan, but there will always be an undersized guard with passion for the game, and the willingness to put his body on the line, for the good of the team.
AI-
Despite it all in your career you have always been you! never sugar coating anything and what was always most importnat was your play on the court-which is what ultimately is most important-and you were spectacular!
As a lifelong sixers fan you know and I know that this city would embrass a comeback by you here. The seast would fill up and the arena would be electric again! Consider coming back for a year-help this team-the young players and entertain the fans that love you.
Marty From Philly
I would like to say that AI is one of the most inspiring members of the NBA. His drive and desire will be missed, he is a true superstar from the old school. He is the catalyst from the days of playing through minor injuries, giving 100 plus percent on the court, and even though he made some mistakes he was never too big to apologize. I am a Detroit fan, but it saddens me to know that AI was happy and thrilled to come to Detroit just to have his spirit snatched away from him. I am upset that my team led him to this very sad announcement. Stay up AI!
Allen “The Wrong Answer” Iverson … ZERO championships. Stephen A. Smith … apologist for all that is wrong with the NBA today, starting with this chucker. Go join the ranks of the unemployed bridge burners, like Stephon Marbury and Latrell Sprewell.

From SAS: Normally, I could respect where you’re coming from. But have you watched how boring the Sixers are? Are you really telling me that you don’t make this move for THIS SEASON, for a player capable of averaging 20 points a night for less than $3-million?

I will not believe that A.I is leaving the game. I have never watched basketball until A.I came to the sixers and I live in Philly. I want to tell Allen “DO not give up.” Never, ever let anyone keep you from doing the thing you clearly love. I cannot say that there is anyone playing basketball in the league that loves the game more than you do. The sixers are practically trying to give away tickets to fill the stadium. We need you home, you deserve to come back home, your fans appreciate you here. We love you for your hard work and dedication to the game. It truly is political the way things are going for you right now. They are trying to break your spirit, don’t let them.

The day when you would like to announce my plans to retire from the National Basketball Association is my birthday. You know,I was very sad that day. However,I heard that you have been training to come back recently. It made me happy and I wish you can make your dream come true.I’m looking forward to seeing you next season.
I don’t understand how Algeria could have lost. That was so fast. I assumed that they had a great chance to do well in this years world cup. Maybe in 4 years. Maybe its time to jump on the Argentina bandwagon. Looks like Demichelis has already scored. Go Argentina. To make me feel better from that devistating loss by Algeria, I have been listening to some funny jokes.. This was kinda funny: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3j7uSbccSc

Allen Iverson is tha only reason I started watching bball. He’s tha greatest player I’ve ever seen! I wouldn’t love ball so much if it wasnt for him. N I thank you. N someday, I would want to meet you in person. I think that would be tha highlight of my life! I would really want you to sign my basketball shoes n ball. Hopefully one day I will get to have that chance at meeting a legend!
