NBA Free Agency Round-Up
What’s up everybody! It’s been a while since I’ve blogged, mainly because I’ve been busy setting a new career path, enjoying my personal life, ofcourse, and focusing on my Podcast, which I thoroughly enjoy doing. In fact, I plan on Videocasting in the very near future, so stay tuned.
Although I’ve got a bunch of stuff I’d like to write about – Michael Jackson, Barack Obama, General Motors, Allen Iverson – everyone’s been asking me about free agency. As a result, if for no other reason than to avoid having to tweet about this every hour of the day – I’m just going to go and focus on a chunk of the NBA so everyone will know what’s going. And…what impact I expect moves and non-moves to have.
Take a look:
Please spare me with all this talk about Allen Iverson and the LA Clippers. That’s a pure disaster waiting to happen, and even Iverson, himself, knows as much.
Don’t get me wrong: I totally understand why the Clippers would want Iverson. Forget the fact that he’s not a mix for this young squad, and that Iverson paired with Baron Davis will almost ensure that rookie Blake Griffin never sees the ball, especially with Mike Dunleavy as their coach. Concentrate, instead, on the Clippers needing someone – anyone — with box-office appeal. Especially since the reigning NBA Champions happen to share the same building with them.
Still, that doesn’t explain Iverson’s interest. Perhaps $$$ explain it best. More specifically, the perceived leverage any interest from the Clippers would automatically have, possibly provoking the Miami Heat to get with the program and bring “The Answer” to South Beach – which is exactly where both he and D-Wade would love for him to end up.
As for Lamar Odom, I’ve got to admit that my first inclination upon hearing that he hadn’t reached an agreement with the Lakers was to say, “To Hell with Odom!” I mean, considering his lack of consistency, his apparent lackadaisical approach and his penchant for skittles and twizzlers (which he stupidly allowed to be featured on ABC/ESPN….in a contract year, no less), Odom wasn’t a bout to get any sympathy this way.
That is, of course, until I learned that he had already agreed on a per-year salary ($9 mil) with the Lakers, but debated the numbers of years being offered, ostensibly infuriating Lakers’ owner Dr. Jerry Buss, who yanked the offer off the table.
To me, that’s just a sleazy thing for Buss to do. It’s also the latest excuse for him to use before dismantling something that wasn’t broken, just as he did with Shaq years earlier.
Say what you want about Odom, but his talent is still difficult to match. His length makes the Lakers a very formidable frontline to contend with. Odom had already agreed to a $5-mil per year pay cut and, oh, they are the World Champions.
I could easily spend significant time scratching my head, wondering what Buss is doing, yet again. But I have a better question:
Since the Lakers already lost Ariza and may lose Odom, leaving them dependent on the sporadic Andrew Bynum, I’m wondering what Kobe has to say about all of this???
A few more teams to touch on:
Boston: With the acquisition of Rasheed Wallace, the Celtics have emerged as the team to beat, in my eyes. They still have Kendrick Perkins. KG will return healthy. They’re motivated, experienced and blessed with true leadership from multiple sources, coach Doc Rivers included. And in Wallace, they captured the two ingredients Rivers said they needed most: A veteran and a shooter.
Result: From my eyes, the only thing that can stop Boston is if Andrew Bynum suddenly becomes significant for the Lakers in the postseason. Aside from that, the Celtics can’t be stopped, much to the chagrin of newly acquired Cavs’ center, Shaquille O’Neal – who called me to ask “What the Hell is Wrong with you, Stephen A!”???
Cleveland: The Cavs acquired Shaq. Good for them. They’re better, which means this could be their year. But we said the same thing last season – when they still had size on their frontline – only to learn their miniature three-some (Mo Williams, Delonte West and Daniel Gibson) were no match for the sizeable shooters Orlando had in their arsenal. Shaq does not help that cause.
Result: Cleveland should’ve gotten their hands on Shawn Marion , too. They allowed Dallas to do so, instead. And that’s why I believe the conference finals is where it will end for them again. Before both Shaq AND LeBron leave for New York.
(Note: That’s Right! I said it, Damnit!)
Orlando: Picking up Vince Carter was huge. But picking up former Mavs’ forward, the tough and athletic Brandon Bass, may have been even bigger. Dwight Howard desperately needed some toughness alongside him on the Magic’ frontline and that’s exactly what he pulled off.
Still though, losing Courtney Lee and Hedo Turkoglu is something I question.
Result: Orlando is still good enough to beat Cleveland again, although that may not happen. They won’t beat Boston with this roster, though.
Others: Detroit’s better with Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva, but not significant in the championship picture. The same could be said for Atlanta, who improved by acquiring Jamal Crawford but inexplicably signed an aging and no-defense-playing Mike Bibby to $18 mil over 3 years. No one else in the East really matters to me. That includes Miami…unless20they get Allen Iverson. If that happens, it’ll take one of the big three to knock off Miami.
San Antonio: They still have Tim Duncan and Tony Parker. And after suffering without a healthy Manu Ginobili the last two years, they acquired Richard Jefferson for big-time insurance.
Result: They’re the second-best team in the West, easily, with a healthy Manu. But still are a frontline player short from knocking off LA. If the Spurs get that, things could get very interesting, but they don’t have it yet. Sorry.
Utah: They had better match that four-year, $32-mil offer sheet from Portland for Paul Millsap. If not, they’ve got to pray Carlos Boozer will stay healthy. This is a good solid team. Re-signing Mehmet Okur was good, too.
Result: It’s too bad that Kirilenko hasn’t panned out to be more that we expected. This is a tough team, but only at home. They’re close to nothing on the road. And all you’re left to do is feel sorry for Deron Williams, the second-best PG in the NBA, as far as I’m concerned.
New Orleans: Th e only reason I’m mentioning them is because of Chris Paul, the game’s best PG. That’s all. Tyson Chandler has to get healthy. David West and the rest of his crew needs to show a pulse
Result: Not much. Paul keeps them competitive, but they seem like one-year wonders right now.
Denver: The Nuggets are legit. They’re a piece – a Marcus Camby-type away – from being potential champions. Everything else is in place.
Result: They would be in the Finals if the Lakers weren’t around. But they are. Enough said.
Dallas: The Mavs are what they are. Solid. Well coached by Rick Carlisle. Blessed with deep-pocket ownership in Mark Cuban. And it all means nothing.
Result: That they acquired Shawn Marion is decent, but he’s not the difference maker. They need a legitimate big man. Marcin Gortat is solid, although certainly not THE answer, but anything – and I do mean ANYTHING…..outside of K-W-A-M-E Brown – is an upgrade from Erick Dampier.
Too bad the Magic agreed to match that offer sheet Dall as extended to Gortat. Now the Mavs are back to square one.
Portland will be trouble if Utah isn’t able to match their offer for Millsap. Houston’s done…but McGrady is still a story to watch, since he’ll play EVENTUALLY for a new contract before the season expires.
If someone else is worth mentioning, forgive me, but I can’t figure it out.
I’ll wrap to you folks later. Take care.

Stephen A.
Can you honestly blame Dr. Buss on the Odom situation? Lamar had already robbed the piggy bank for 4 years at 14 mil per season and played at 4 mil per season level. I think Dr. Buss is still remembering the Odom we all saw against Boston. So to offer 9 mil for which actually equates to 18 mil because of the tax situation I would be hot also. Lamar ask Latrell Sprewell if 7 mil over three years was enough to feed his family or was the 0 mil over zero years better?
LeBron & Shaq, both in NYC. da GAAHden will be rockin’ in 2010. Startin’ to wonder wut’s the deal yo in Detroit. Mr. D. waz da master.
Gr8 minds think alike, right as rain on all fronts. Hope fate has something better in store for my pistons than last year although I doubt it. Oh woe is me.
You mention teams like New Orleans who haven’t made big moves on a post about free agency when there are other teams you are sleeping on. THE WASHINGTON WIZARDS. Washington took out the trash in return for Randy Foye and Mike Miller. This gives Washington a very good 3 point shooter in Miller and a backup point guard in Foye who can shoot but also drive and dish. A healthy Arenas and Brendan Haywood coming back will help not to mention we still have all stars in Caron Butler and Jamison. Nick Young, Dominic McGuire, Javale McGee and Andray Blatche are all young guys who continue to improve and will be at the very least solid role players in this league. Not saying Washington can win the East, but this team will definitely make some noise.
###
From SAS: Washington is very intriguing. But no one has a legitimate shot at a championship without an inside presence on the offensive end. Period.
Good reading…One question, what do you think about Lamar Odom and Carlos Boozer joining Wade in Miami. I just heard it is all but a done deal. What do you hear?
First! We’ve missed you Stephen A.
###
From SAS: I’ve missed ya’ll, too.
Stephen,
I’m confused on the Mike Biiby thing here in Atlanta also. I just don’t get it but when your brought in and make the playoffs each season that’s the reward, in Atlanta. What I do not like is the fact their is no room for a solid Flip Murray anywhere yet they “seemed” to entertain Josh Childress…pardon me if I dont see what other people see in Childress. Enough on the home state.
Nice look with the Celtics. I’ve had them since the KG signing and to watch a press conference with KG, Ray, Paul and Sheed at the table, thats down right scary. Yet I’m a beneath the surface guy, will Leon Powe still be around to provide rest/depth and grab cleanup minutes (what Big Baby doesn’t get). Yes one outburst in the Finals doesn’t make you a celeb but I think he’s worth keeping on the roster. Also on the curious side is the Celtic camp in anyway considering bring Starbury back? Seems like he knew the adjustments he HAD to make and something tells me he can do that from training camp this season.
Courtney Lee getting shipped still hasn’t set well with me. Yea you have VC but something about Lee is special and I just shake my head as to why move him. Bass and Howard is enough said, yet I expected Orlando to match Cuban offer for Gortat after the sign and trade with Turk, they weren’t going to let Dallas skate that easy…nah? Now you must play him since your paying him. Can those three be solid enough up front?
As always enjoy your work and the example.
JHillsman
Stephen A, have you lost your marbles? You understand why the Clippers would want Iverson? C’mon! The Clippers need WINS to draw fans to watch them play. Iverson would bring them more losses and downgrade the organization even more!
I agree with you that Blake Griffin would never see the ball with Baron and AI fighting for it. Not to mention the negative effect that this would have on up and coming star Eric Gordon.
I’m well aware of the Clippers past. Adding Iverson to the mix wouldn’t just hurt AI. It would devastate the Clippers. AI isn’t the answer for the Clippers…..or many other teams, either.
###
From SAS: As far as the Clippers and A.I. are concerned, I really don’t understand your gripe. I agree with you. What’s the problem?
Love your thoughts, I’m a huge Bulls fan, and have been very very disappointed with their off season. We had a chance to get on the map, making a big move right before, or during the draft, but instead we did nothing. Then there’s been talks of Boozers 4 Heinrick and Tyrus Thomas, it would be a bad move unless the Bulls could score DWade in 2010. I’m just saddened that the Bulls have pretty much given up on the 2009 season and are just waiting for 2010 to give Rose some help. I’m also a huge Luol Deng hater, and pray that the Bulls can find a way to get rid of him.
Keep up the good work.
yo i would like to ask you i live in miami aka m.i.yayo they need to bring iverson to miami right now what you think
###
From SAS: Agreed.
Stephen,
I was so glad to discover your site. You are truly a force to be reckoned with and I can’t wait to see you in the future doing even bigger and better things. I appreciate you insights and I will be checking in regularly. By the way… Any chance AI does a 1 year deal in NYC?? Just asking.
Peace,
DJ
###
From SAS: No chance, whatsoever.
what do you think of the heat’s chances if they manage to pull of getting both boozer AND odom as it looks like they might do…and how does that affect your opinion on the lakers-spurs matchup ? go celtics…one more run for the rings for ray ray !
###
From SAS: Still don’t think they’d win it all, but they’d be one of the top-3 in the East.
Steven A.,
Always love the wisdom and the fact that you speak the truth regardless of what others think… Also I’m glad I’m not the only one who think Dampier is TRASH….
Thanks again for the insight…
James
Great stuff as always Stephen A. And I have to agree, the Celtics are the team to beat…
No love for the Knicks StephenA? How about all the talk with Nate & DLee getting contract offers from Olympikos?
###
From SAS: The Knicks are a waste of time, regarding talks about championship contention. Reach back out to me in 2010
Stephen A. you get me so excited every time I hear how convinced you are that Lebron is coming to NY. That being said you are the only one saying this, at this point with cleveland spending a ton of money every year catering to Lebron like nobodys business I just cannot believe he would come to NY, for what more money? Cleveland can pay him more, he already has a ton of endorsements so this global icon thing is totally overblown, so Ill ask you why would he leave his hometown to go to a worse team that plays no defense? I just cant see it.
Stephen A. I agree with most of what you said but I do quibble with a few things.
L.A. Lakers – I think Bynum will come back strong. He was definitely still recovering from the knee injury he experienced last year and did not have a good playoffs. WIth much needed rest and further rehab I think he will be back and ready to go for next year. Plus, Ron Artest aint playing that naw! Ron Ron (and Kobe) will get in his ish if he doesn’t play up. All that said, I am not worried about Bynum. Gausol will only get better and stronger, both mentally and physically just as he did last year. I think the Lakers are motivated to win another chip now that they know what it feels like, and what it takes. Odom I believe will re-sign barring some unbelievable events. Lakers back in Finals next year. Another point, the Lakers are still a relatively young team, not to mention, they are probably the deepest team in the league. Kobe and Artest will not have to play 35 -40 minutes a game this year so they wil lbe fresh for the playoffs.
Denver Knuckleheads (uh hmm, I mean Nuggets) – They are what they are. Highflying, fast-paced, athletic, and at times, unintelligent basketball players. They are scary, but only until they are out-smarted by either the Lakers or a healthy San Antonio Spurs team. I think even Dallas has the POTENTIAL to beat the Nuggets. Chauncey is nice, but only until it matters. He has not shown up in the clutch since the Finals in 04 against the Lakers.
Cleveland Cavs – No argument there. Shaq I guess is a nice piece, but I can only imagine him playing with that team. They already have no offensive chemistry or continuity (besides giving Lebron the ball and moving out of the way), and to now add a huge, no moves having, bully of a center? I just don’t see it ending wel this year. They should have gone after Odom or Shawn Marion. The main reason I do not trust Cleveland is their coach. As far as X’s and O’s go (and creativity on offense), Mike Brown might be the worst coach to win Coach of the Year. I like his defensive mentality, but you still have to score consistently to win. I also do trust Lebron’s stubborness and his lack of CONSISTENT killer instinct. Yes, he hit a huge shot in the playoffs against the Magic, but he still has yet to prove that in crunch time, he is going to bury the other team like a Wade,Kobe, Duncan, or KG would do.
Orlando – If Dwight Howard spends countless hours this summer working on his post moves, mid range jumper, free throws, and passing out of the post, Orlando has a good chance of getting back to the Finals. I hope Dwight calls Hakeem Olajuwon and asks him if he can come spend a few weeks down in Houston with him to train and get some post tips. Also, with the addition of Vince Carter, the Magic now have someone (athletic) that can put the ball on the floor and create for himself along with others; not to mention, Vince can still shoot the three ball. I do not mind getting rid of Turkaglu. He is nice but he is also slow and pretty soft. Do not question Vince’s motivation next year. The Magic might be even better next year. They have a pretty deep and relatively young team. I stil like them coming out of the East.
Boston – I refuse to just put them as the favorite out of the East, or as the winner of the 2010 NBA Finals. I like the move to get Rasheed. They had to do it; however, which Rasheed are they getting? The motivated Rasheed from ’99 and ’04, or the Rasheed from the other 12 years in the league. Plus they are older and less deep of a team now. Powe is out, Big Baby is there but lets be real, is he the answer coming off the bench. I understand Rasheed will be coming off the bench correct? I would hope so because Perkins is a good defender in the post and actually has some decent moves as an offensive player. I worry about this teams lack of depth come playoff time, coupled with their age. I mean, does Doc plan to watch Ray Allen’s minutes this year. He looked a little tired at the end last year.
SA Spurs and Mavs – I think both of teams will be formidable, but the Spurs are going to have to stay healthy and the Mavs are going to have to play tougher. They will both likely make it to the 2nd round.
Well that is enough rambling. I’m out!
Nate
I am so happy I found this site to tell you how pleased I am that i dont have you shoved in our faces anymore. You spew nothingness with your mind changing with the wind. LOL at wanting more money from espn only to find yourself as an internet troll
Stephen A:
I keep up with your site religiously and get excited every time there’s a new post. Call me a loyal follower. But let’s get down to business. I’ll start in the East.
Boston is definitely the team to beat in the East. If the playoffs started today and their entire roster was healthy along with every other team in the NBA, they would be in the championship. HOWEVER, they are old and getting brittle despite having potential in Rondo and Glen Davis. KG doesn’t have as much killer instinct as most people expect as he proved during the championship run. Rondo is the #5 PG in the league with Chauncy Billups, Jason Kidd, CP3 and Deron W. ahead of him. I digress. They’re the best in the East.
Still don’t understand letting go of Hedo for Vince Carter because he’s one of the main reasons they caused so many match up problems for everyone. It’s intimidating for any team to see a 6’10″ shooter/facilitator walking the ball up the court instead of the 6′ PG and Vince won’t be able to have the same effect. As good as he is, it’s a downgrade. Still, pending they keep Gortat, I’m glad they went and got Brandon Bass. After they let Hedo, Skip-to-my-Lou and Courtney go originally, I had no idea who would be in the starting line up. The only problem now is that they look like every other team in the league and probably won’t have the same edge they had last year since they lost Hedo. I love Dwight and always get him first in fantasy drafts, but I love him better at PF than center.
Moving on, I still can’t bet against LeBron James. I can put up thousands against the Cavaliers, but not with LeBron on the court. The aging Shaq will take a little pressure to perform off him, but probably not enough to win a championship. The only thing most people are discounting is that LEBRON IS STILL GETTING BETTER. I wish they would get rid of Varejao and I’m a little upset that they slept on getting Shawn Marion, Trevor Ariza and Turkoglu. There are still a couple moves they could make though right SA?
Shame on Atlanta for not being able to get CP3 or AI, although AI wouldn’t have been much of an upgrade from Bibby defensively. They do need more attention and, as good as their team is, Josh Smith is a choker in the first 30 minutes of the game. He needs to mature and they should have made a move on Amare Stoudemire before they signed Bibby back.
Are there ANY talks about trying to acquire ANYONE in New Orleans? They need to get a back-to-the-basket frontline. They’re in a toned down version of Cleveland’s situation before they got Shaq: CP3 can only carry the team so far. West is good but so is Ilgauskas.
Derick Rose has the potential to be a hall-of-famer if he improves consistently. Tyrus Thomas is a buddy of mine and he’s trying his best to work on that mid-range shot he has. They had pieces to make something serious work out until they suspiciously got rid of Ben Gordon. I don’t think anyone else will make noise in the East that I haven’t mentioned unless Miami gets AI, which probably won’t happen.
In the West, the Lake show is the best as usual. Purple and Gold stays on top as usual. They don’t NEED Lamar Odom, although they SHOULD keep him. They should’ve kept Ariza over him, but that’s just my opinion. They just have what most teams in the league don’t: a great front line with one good defensive player and one good offensive player. Gasol is anemic on D every other possession and Bynum is still growing on offense. Artest will take some of that pressure off the defense, but coaching will keep them shoulders above the rest as usual.
Staying in LA, we’ll hear about Blake Griffin’s stats and highlights all season, but not passed game 82. It’s a shame that their team is cursed though and that a player as good as AI can’t find a home. He should just go to Charlotte even though he’d have to live in relative obscurity since they are in a conservatiive city/state.
San Antonio will go deep barring health issues. We agree on that. They just need an image overhauling. The only reason people think they’re so boring is because of the black/grey/white jersey design! Otherwise they’re one of the most consistent teams in this decade.
Utah better keep their roster. Deron Williams is my favorite point guard in the league and one of the most fearless players out there. Watch out for Ronnie Brewer. If they let go of Millsap to the Blazers, then they’ll basically be shifting their balance of power over to them. These two teams are almost identical to me with Brandon Roy being as big of an impact as Deron Williams. We’ll see by the end of the month.
Denver is still number 2 in the West. Melo is the #3 impact player in the league behind Kobe and on LeBron’s heels. DWade is great but Melo emerged as the MVP of the playoffs because, the one game they lost, he was recovering from illness. Honestly, they should’ve beat the Lakers, who only like to play great when they need to.
Houston is out of the picture. T-Mac is one of my favorite players of all time but isn’t much of a leader and can’t stay healthy. He should’ve never left Orlando to begin with. And they’re nothing but mediocre without Yao and Ron-Ron.
I’m proud of Dallas getting Marion but he won’t push them over the edge. What they need to focus on is developing a player like Gerald Green who has the potential to be an all-star if he would mature and develop a mid-range game so he could get some playing time. I’d want him on my team if I was rebuilding, but I wish he had gone to college a couple years. They have pieces, even without Brandon Bass.
Memphis might make some noise, but not much. Rudy Gay is going to be a franchise player, much like a more explosive Joe Johnson, and they better hold on to him unlike the Suns who seem to develop the best players and then ship them off in their prime. I was so hopeful and sad to see Amare get hurt. They’ll probably move him after his eye gets healthy and averages a double-double this season.
That’s about it. I’ve been waiting for you to do a blog like this since you were still doing playoff coverage on TV. Great luck with your future and I’ll be posting and keeping up faithfully!
(Side note, it’s GREAT to see LSU players having such a tremendous effect on some of the best teams in the league! GEAUX TIGERS!)
What is it with you and LeBron and all the good players to New York? You actually think they all want to go there? You guys haven’t had a big star their in years!! Get over yourself man, nobody wants to play for that crap team you call the Knicks. Just like Kidd didn’t probably cause he knew he had a better chance at a title in Dallas than New York..LOL. You think LeBron would want to go there..please!!!!!!!!!!!! This probably won’t get posted bit oh well, I wouldn’t be surprised.
I wouldn’t bet against Doc Buss. He has 9 world titles under his belt. He seems to have a good feel for the monetary value of players, too. In the current NBA economic environment, Odom shouldn’t sneeze at $9M per year. It seems to me that Odom is the kind of player you want to be playing for a contract. I don’t really trust his game with a long-term guaranteed contract. Too up and down. For every good game, he will disappear in games, too. Maybe those sugar highs and lows are the problem. He puts garbage food into his body and brags about it. Not too smart. The NBA would be more interesting in 2010 if Odom and Iverson both went to Miami. That event would make the NBA west more up for grabs. I agree about Iverson to the Clippers. Don’t like the idea. I got a strong feeling Blake Griffin is going to be the kind of player the Clippers can build around for the next 12 years. He needs to be the star from day 1.

How does adding AI make Miami the fourth best team in the East? They need a real point guard, not a slower, less dynamic, and shorter version of D-Wade.

From SAS: Offense. And a supplementary piece to a Superstar. Remember, all you need is a win in one playoff series to be one of the top-4 teams in a conference. That won’t be too hard.
As a celtics fan, I think we still solid backups for PG, SG and SF…..I loved the coment on K Brown and Dampier….If Melo plays at the Wade, Lebron level, the Nuggets are better than SA and even better that LA without Lamar….
Odom did not make 14 million a year. He is not taking a 5 million pay cut. He made 11 million a year but counted as 14 million a year towards the salary cap for being traded to LA. Stop saying that he made 14 mil a year.
Dear Mr. Stephen A.B.C.D.E.F.G. Smith,
I’m curious as to why exactly LeBron James is heading to New York? To play with the undeniably talented roster that Mr. Walsh has assembled? Oh that’s right, they have no talent on the team, just potential. And how often does potential turn into stardom in the NBA? Well, I don’t have to answer that question for you to know the answer.
That turns us to the next point. Is he heading to New York to play with another big time free agent who will also sign in 2010? Highly doubtful. If you’ve paid attention to the basketball news lately, you know that the cap is projected to shrink (possibly substantially). This would certainly indicate that in order for New York to sign multiple free agents, these stars would have to take a pay cut. To that I ask you this: How many times have you heard LeBron say he wants to be the first billionaire athlete? Or say that he wants to be a global icon? In other words, LeBron isn’t taking a pay cut.
Would he leave to play for the basketball genius known as Mike D’Antoni? Surely it’s true that Mr. D’Antoni runs a fun and entertaining system, but is it successful? He failed to push a very talented Suns team out of the West, and he couldn’t make a move with his talentless New York team in the ”weak” East. Mike Brown, on the other hand, has taken what many pundits believed to be a talent-starved team (minus LeBron of course) to the Finals in 2007, withing a couple of points of beating the eventual NBA champions in 2008, and 66-wins and the Eastern Conference Finals in 2009. Yet, Brown receives little credit for this success… except from LeBron, who credits Brown for transforming him into one of the league’s top defenders.
It really is time to give up on this New York story line. any reader with half of a brain knows this just isn’t a realistic scenario. If LeBron loves New York so much, he can get an offseason home in New York. Ahh, yeah, that’s right… He keeps his offseason home in Akron, OH, residing in a palace that he just built last year.
Keep up the good work, Stephen! Love the blog!
###
From SAS: My Brother, you really need to stop wasting my time with your diatribes and listen to what I say. I didn’t say LeBron is heading to NY because I’m a New Yorker and he wants to go, and all that nonsense. I’m said he’s going to New York BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT I WAS TOLD!!! Now you take a moment and figure out who exactly told me that. Knowing the contacts I have, the people I’ve spoken to, the interviews I’ve done. Let me be clear: I’m a reporter, first! I don’t apply wishful thinking to my journalism because, frankly, I could give a damn if he does or does not come to New York. He doesn’t pay my bills. I’m just telling you what I was told. If it doesn’t happen, fine! It doesn’t happen. But we won’t know until 2010, will we?
Meanwhile, you rely on your logic and wishful thinking. I’ll lean on who I spoke to and what was told to me.
I sincerely hope I will not have to address this issue with you again. It’s annoying. I’m tired of the LeBron/New York talk. Wait a year then come rap to me.
This is, without a doubt, the worst blog I’ve read. Your writing is nothing but rambling nonsense with no basis in fact.
You were a journalist at one point? WHAT?!?!?!
###
From SAS: Always appreciate the kind words, my man. thank you.
yo do you think miami going do any thing cuz it do not take that much for d-wade to get it done
###
From SAS: D-Wade’s a bad boy. But even with Iverson, they wouldn’t have enough to beat Boston or Cleveland.
SAS:
I’m wondering if LA really made the right decision in gettig rid of Ariza. Hopefully Ron Artest does not explode. I’m still remembering the “your dreaming comment” that Larry Brown made to Ariza when he played for the Knicks. He’s young and he has been improving year by year. If Odom wants more money I would have given him 9.5m. But I think he might end up being a slacker.
Leon
###
From SAS: END UP??? Odom’s been a slacker. The boy has all the skills in the world. No matter how good he is, imagine how much better he would’ve been with a bit more dedication. I love the dude, personally. He’s one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet. Not a mean, malicious bone in his body. Sadly, though, that may be part of his problem.
Dear Stephen A.
How far do you think the stock will rise for the Boston Celtics if they do acquire a Marquis Daniels type player?
i wud like 2 noy da MVP title has basically become a team award…. how da hell does lebron win it n d-wade doesn’t ????!!!!!!! wade tuk his team from an abismal 15-67 one year to da playoffs da next. lebron gets 109 first place votes while wade gets 3 or 4 i believe, i think its all a conspiracy. wade was da best player dis year just like kobe was better den dirk a few years bak
C’mon Stephen A! Give my Spurs more props for picking-up A-McDyess. He may not be a big name to the NBA; however, he is as much a blue-collar horse as yo’ boy Lamar Odom. The only thing we lack, now, is a defensive stopper. With Dunc’, Manu, Tony, Jefferson, McDyess, Gooden, Blair, and Mason, I think that we have a little more depth. As I said, once we find that one big defensive stopper, y’all may as well give us the title back- except, this time, it will be during an even-numbered year. Defensively, we may have a few question marks. I ask you one question, though: Who is going to stop all of that fire power? Holla’ at me!
Not huge basketball fan, but still liked the post. Please comment on Martellus Bennett’s stupidity. Some people think there is nothing wrong with his “Black Olympics” post.
so stephen who better melo or d-wade i think wade better allround but i like melo to but its sometthing about d-wade to me he great
###
From SAS: Wade is better all-around, and certainly blessed with more box-office appeal. But Melo is no joke. He’s getting better and he’s coming.
Stephen A,
What do you think my Heat will do? I would love to see them get Odom, and then trade Jermaine Old Neal and Beasley for Bosh. They would still have Udonis coming off the books next year to free up some additional cap space to sign another player and extend Wade.
How do you think Orlando will fare without Hedo creating the match-up problems that got them to the finals?
-LD
stephen a i think that the spurs are comin yo if they have all they guns watch out and its would be sad to see iverson go to the clippers it would be sad he needs to just come to miami
Whats up SAS! Me again-
First of all dont know why people want to come on and Bash you. You have more insight and contacts then any of us. Obviously you are part of the “Locker Room Code”. Wish people would listen to your thoughts and Insights, and take it for what its worth..PERIOD!!
Ok , Ive called a few things ( artest to the Lakers on here back in May),, few thoughts and questions for the season.
East-
My thought on Miami is that I think they are still (2) players away. Wade first of all needs a 2 for his 1-2 puch. Every great team has a batman and robin. If they pick up Boozer( doubtful) ill give em a shot. They need a strong PF or C.
The problem with the east is they are going to beat up each other all year. Its going to come down to who has homecourt advantage. I dont see anyone out of the east winning 60 games this year. They have done so much swaping, but you notice, nobody really heads West.
I do think Boston/Orlando will play for the East with Boston winning, but my bottom to be there will be the Pistons Wizards Nets and Sixers..in the playoffs 5- 6-7-8 seeds, giving the top 4 a run for their money.
West-
Im a Laker fan, but if Jerry has his son or whoever that was at the end of finals speak again.. I will personally fly from Kansas CIty myself and hit him in his mouth.. that was pathetic.( OK that was my vent)
People talking about Artest hurting chemisty. I think that was the best think that happened to them. Odom will still be a Laker( Yes I said it) he is not going to Miami. it will be 4 years 36 million and its a wrap. As for Bynum.. Kareem needs to work on him solely, he still to me hurts. I think like Tiger Woods, 18 majors– Kobe sees (1) thing, 6 rings- Period. ANd they know the light at the tunnel with all the talent switching places, all the teams are virtually going to be even.
I see the Lakers/Nuggets again this year.. with the Lakers prevailing, and we are back to the Lakers/Celtics final.
but dont sleep on the Mavs this year.. will give the Nuggets a better push year, and a close call between SPurs and Nuggets… too much scoring will push the Nuggets over the Spurs.
Kobe gets 5 and Artest gets 1-
Im out and PS- WHo cares what Lebron does- He is the Brock Lesner of Basketball. Attitude, whiny butt, poor sport- and until he gets a ring, please dont compare him to KOBE! As STephen A said in Lil Wayne’s song: Kobe is ” The most complete basketball player in the game today..Bar NONE!
Hey Stephen,
Dude, I knew that we would eventually get into it regarding my team. First and foremost, I think the Clips should fire Dunleavy as coach, and keep him on as GM. He just can’t do both. He’s not that talented. He’s getting good free agents but can’t make them gel. I think a more motivated, innovative coach would be able to find a system that would make B. Davis, B. Griff and crew play to a respectable 7th or 8th seed in the west. Dunleavy’s system doesn’t go along with his team and if we did add A.I. it would result in failure even though we all would love, I mean absolutely love to have him here at Staples with us. I’d like to know who would you see as a better coach for this organization. Yes, it seems that we are a bit “cursed” or maybe we have an a-hole of an owner who can’t seem to take this business seriously as the rest of the franchise owners.
Now with that being said, about the rest of your blog, Odom will resign….he aint’ crazy! The Celtics, I’m not as confident as you are about Sheed and Ray-Ray. The latter really worries me because he just seems to have aged overnight. Cavs will maybe get to the ECF but I highly doubt it. Bron-Bron will leave and become a circus act in NYC. Orlando did well during this free agency, however, if Superman doesn’t get better on the block, then its all for not. If by chance, A.I. goes to Miami, so? They still will do NOTHING! I loved what San Antonio did and the Lakers should fear them. Also the Nuggets will be highly motivated, they were too close to come back and not take it seriously. I happen to disagree with your comparisons of Melo v Wade. Melo is the better player and I would call him #3 (Kobe #1, Bron#2, Timmy #4, CP3 #5). Holla back….ClippaChick outta LBC.
good post SAS…
A good post concerning A.I. – the best small man to ever suit up in the NBA!
I too think that A.I. would do better in Miami – but what other pieces do they need?
Stephen A.,
Been following the blog for awhile. Great points made especially about Boston. Glad they got Rasheed. That’s a good upgrade for them. It seems people have selective memories. Boston probably would repeated if KG was healthy but I’ll admit Kobe was a man on a mission. It would been an interesting rematch this year. The man got my respect. Hopefully we get the rematch in 2010!
Mr Smith, Ai has not signed anywhere yet, so it he still thinking about going to a contender (The Spurs) or is he going to the heat. And do you know if Michael Jordan is going to buy the Bobcats. Curious
###
From SAS: A.I. is trying to work things out with the Heat. He wouldn’t mind he Spurs, either, although that’s a long shot. MJ is trying to buy the Bobcats, but he’s got a few roadblocks in front of him.
What up Stephen A. Glad to hear u keepin it movin with your career. Can’t keep a good brother down. As for my beloved Lakers, They need to get it together with L.O. At first I was like “let him go, hell he dont show all the time anyway”, then I came to my senses and realized that the Lakers need Odom just as much as he needs the Lakers. Odom had the privilege of playing with the best player and playing for the best coach and only flourished occassionally. If goes to another team he will be one of the big two on the team and we all know Odom doesnt excel when he is one of the focal points of the offense. He needs to be in a situation where is the 3rd or 4th option.
Now as for Dr Buss, “What are you doing?” Are you seriously going to take back an offer that you made because he didn’t call you back in time even though there wasn’t a deadline? Man Please! Lamar may not be a lot of things that he could and should be but where else are you going to find someone his sized that can handle the rock? Dr. Buss need to wake up and open the talks up again and Lamar need to quit tripping and pick up the phone.
@ClippaChick: i love melo you can’t put him over d-wade and wade got a ring come keep it real my man
###
From SAS: Who put him over D-Wade???
@ko mcneal: @ClippaChick that name you see right there put him over d-wade i got a lot of love for melo d-wade melo and dwight is my guys but sas tell me is boozer going to miami cause he keep sayin he wants miami he live’s here and where do you think iverson going please tell me
###
From SAS: Boozer definitely wants to come to Miami. The problem is this economic recession. He wasn’t going to get the money per year he’s earning right now in this economic climate. So his thought process is to wait another year, pray this recession fades into the twilight and it’s back to business-as-usual, just so he can get the money he’s earned. Plus, due to questions about his durability, his market value wasn’t that high right now. That’s the deal. He may actually end up getting more in a sign-and-trade next Summer. A lot of teams are using that methodology these days to circumvent cap restraints.
Yo Stephen A.,
Miss u on da radio and tube my brother…one question…what do u see in the future 4 my Knicks?
###
From SAS: LeBron AND D-Wade or Kobe.
Yeah, Iverson would be great in Miami, huh Stephen ABCDEFG? Let’s see, he’s admitted that he won’t come off the bench, he needs the ball in his hands constantly, his #s are in steep decline, and he has a terrible attitude.
Haha, you think that this will put the Heat at #4 in the East? Sheesh, no wonder you’re not with ESPN anymore. For you, it was always style over substance (much like Iverson). Saying something loudly was more important than it being correct, isn’t that right?
YOU THINK THE KNICKS ARE GETTING LEBRON AND WADE??? HAHA.
Dude, I think 75% on here know sports better than you. In fact, I can guarantee it. Ever heard of a salary cap? You have any idea what’s going on with the economy? Doubtful.
BTW, how are them cheeze doodles tasting?
sas i know ai real talk i know he wants o show people that he got it still miami would be a good place him wade and boozer be a big 3 na mean but ai got a lot left
Love what you bring, love what you’re doing, love your professionalism and perseverance in these times. Keep it up brother. I’m really enjoying this boundless boisterous Stephen A and am keenly looking forward to your bigger and brighter future.
“sas i know ai real talk i know he wants o show people that he got it still miami would be a good place him wade and boozer be a big 3 na mean but ai got a lot left”
- ko mcneal, please rewrite this so it actually makes sense and is readable. In it’s current form, it is not English.
@Rick: like i said i know iverson i know he really wants miami real bad we want him down here in the m.i.yayo
@ko mcneal:
Much better. Iverson wants Miami b/c they’re the only team interested in him. He refuses to come off the bench and actually admitted in a Detroit Free Press article yesterday that his #1 goal is to have fun (not winning). He skipped practices with the Pistons last year and quit 3/4 thru the season. Have fun with him.
BTW, stephen A, your blog is a hot mess. Why even bother? Just quit already, nobody likes you.
@ko mcneal: Sweetie…..I’m a Chick! ie….ClippaChick. Anyways, I know that DWade has a ring but what has he done since then. He’s not a leader his game has diminished since the ring. Yes I know he’s been injured but Kobe plays injured and so does many other “superstars”. I think he has the potential to be better but I just don’t see him as motivated as Melo.
Does this dude even update his blog? He makes a post every other week and now, I see him on serious news programs trying to act like a real journalist. Haha.
Question – Stephen A, did you know that there are pages in the newspaper that cover topics other than sports? Like business, metro, arts & life, etc. If so, would you ever consider reading one of them? Thanks!
###
From SAS: I usually wouldn’t waste my time answering to jackasses like yourself, but I will admit that you amuse me.
See, here’s my credentials. Growing up poor and black. Playing on a Basketball Scholarship, which paid for my education, obviously. Interning in Winston-Salem, Atlanta, Greensboro and New York, before landing at the New York Daily News. Going to the Philadelphia Inquirer in 1994 and getting promoted 8 times in 8 years. Breaking news. Cultivating sources. Ultimately becoming one of only 21 African-American Sports Columnist in the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Hosting my own TV AND Radio Show. Being a Journalist for the last 15 years — AND STILL….having people like yourself actually question my credentials….along with whether or not I actually read other sections of a newspaper.
Yet, if I had the temerity to question the motivation behind such an incendiary email, or whether or not these comments were aimed in my direction because I’m BLACK, then I’m the one bringing up race and being a racist, huh?
All I will say to you Jason is this: People like you never cease to amaze me. I’ll pray for you, my brother. YOu most certainly will need it.
i know this doesnt have anything to do with the subject above, but what about the hold up on reinstating michael vick. the commissioner is tripping, its a shame what is going on with the situation. the man has done his time and now he should be reinstated. why do you think it is taking so long to reinstate him. waht is the commissioners motivate for waiting on this situation.
@ Stephen A
- I saw you on MSNBC last week. Your performance was dreadful, you were borderline incoherent and kept raising your voice. It was obvious that you were more interested in creating a spectacle than getting your point across (assuming you did have a point…did you?).
My initial question had nothing to do with race, nor your credentials. Here’s what I do know – you were a mediocre writer for the Inquirer who wrote controversial things (usually incorrect) to get attention. Then you took your circus act to ESPN. After your schtick ran its course, you were cut loose. Real journalists who report facts (Hollinger, Broussard, Chad Ford) are still at ESPN, what a surprise!
It sounds like you’re an insecure and defensive man-child. Don’t pray for me, I don’t need it. Like I said before, just pick up a copy of the NY Times, WSJ, etc. and read the non-sports sections. Then you’ll start to make more sense. You are one hot mess!
“Hosting my own TV AND Radio Show.”
LOL, Steve Smith, did you just list ‘Quite Frankly’ as a success? Wikipedia states that Quite Frankly “flopped immediately” and one reviewer called it a “colossal failure.” For future reference, Steve Smith, you’re going to want to distance yourself from that trainwreck as much as possible.
@ClippaChick: what do you mean what has he done almost won mvp took a 15 season made it to 45 and he wade what you mean you fool he a top 3 guy in the nba and stephen a f all these haters you the man 4life iverson the man 4life so we love the haters iverson we love you and stephen a down here in miami aka m.i.yayo
@Steve Smith
Why did you turn Jason’s question into a racial issue? He just questioned whether you were a real journalist or not. You played the race card (predictably). Why??
first off i miss hearen on espn radio while i am @ work second i just wanted to vent about your boy lebron “give me the tape ” james c’mon stephen even you must admit if you playing ball chances r sombody some day is gonna throw it on you u cant have um all it happen to the greatest (his Airness) @ the garden when starks put one down betta yet when AI crossed jordan @ the top of the key im from brooklyn and went to lincoln h.s with bassy lance and i am cool with Q aswell all these cats r cool the more i hear about lebron (not shaken hands when orlando kicked there butts )i know you would of blasted um if you was on the air lol is it just me?? or you people crowned him wayyyyy to earley ( hey stephen if you got any pull or pointers check my music out cdotportermusic thats my myspace url its this song called money machine if you need a rapper when you surface again let me kno thanks god bless)
Stephen A Smith – Your credentials are weak and misleading. How does playing college basketball prepare you to speak on MSNBC about REAL issues? It doesn’t at all. So why’d you feel to put that in there?
You’re a nobody.
###
From SAS: Thanks for the kind words, Will. Much appreciated. Feel free to keep tuning into my website
@Will: @Jason:
Wowwww we got some haters on here.. I think you guys need to listen to some T.I or some Maino, so you guys could learn how not to be a hater….Stephen. A. has done great things for the Minority class , when it comes to Sports Journalism. But when you fools question the man’s credentials and his career’s work, you look more stupid everytime. I got my laugh for the day from you two dumasses
What are the wizards thinking signing Oberto??? He is no good we need one more big man to be real contenders. Right??
###
From SAS: The Wizards desperately need big men more than most other teams. They have all the scorers they need (Arenas, Jamison, Butler, Foye and Miller). They need some size on their frontline. Brendan Haywood went down last year and look what happened. And he’s still a project, so what does that tell you.
Stephen A.
Always good to see another brotha like myself speak their mind, however your response to a comments KOBE being one of the three to the Knicks lets be serious that will never happen. Now lets really get one thing out the way Dr. Jerry Buss track record (good) has been proven over the years, the Shaq saga was was not his fault at all. Would you pay a player that much money out of shape every year except one (1990-2000) and not showing respect to management I dont think so. By the way the most dominate player is suppose to lead the league in blocks, rebounds at least one year in his career. I think keeping KOBE over Shaq was a good business decision, last time I check his he has the best player in the league still and I think he just won another NBA title. Lastly Lamar will be miss if he goes elsewhere, however due to the challenging economic times for all teams I think Buss will be fine and LO needs to be wise in how he deals with one of the best organizations in all of sports
Stephen A. with the wizards having so many guards can you see a trade in the future with mike james and another guard for a real big man. To get them over the top and make them a real contender?
###
From SAS: We’re not talking about the Wizards, or any other non-title-contending teams until the preseason begins, Mike. Sorry. It’s just not worth my time, which should tell you all you need to know.
@KJay85:
fools seldom differ
@Jeremy:
“But when you fools question the man’s credentials and his career’s work, you look more stupid everytime”
- Steven A was fired from ESPN. His TV show got canceled almost immediately after being called a “colossal failure.” He was booted from the Philly Inquirer. He doesn’t have “credentials,” he has a string of disasters. BTW, for some good laughs, look up stephen a. smith on youtube.
Stephen A.
Please do not waste your time with some of these jerks on here, they obviously did not get enough attention at home during their childhood. I am changing my career from business and going into my life long dream Sportscasting preferrably play-by-play late in my 30′s (37). Therefore it is people like yourself,Mike Tirico, Jim Hill(KCBS LA), and so forth that give me hope and faith that no matter what anything is possible in the sports broadcasting industry epecially with God on my side.
Now Bro. are you going to respond to my comments above on how you ripped my man Dr.J Buss in how he is dealing with the Lamar Odom situation
@steven a smith:
you have no credentials. you were on ESPN to say silly things. when people got sick of your antics, they threw you to the curb like a McDonalds wrapper. stick to talking sports, not politics.
Thank God Lamar Odom resigned with the Lakers.
They’ll need him to repeat.
Stepehn A.
Just like I predicted the Los Angeles Lakers showing why they are still one of the top three organizations in all of sports. Lamar Odom did the best thing he has ever done in his career and that was resigned with the Lake Show, all Buss did in regards to the LO situation was show who is, a solid businessman who knows how far to push the envelope. Therefore Lakers will repeat if there are no significant injuries and massage RON-RON (Artest)ego as well. No matter how many small forwards the best in the west has or the beast of the east sends Mellow, Jefferson, Lebron,Pierce and so forth will be no match and very hard to dethrone the Champs. They have the length, championship pedigree, and now physical toughness with the addition of Artest to be a mismatch for whoever they play. You heard it here first Lakers 4-2 over the Celtics next summer , Holla back.
###
From SAS: No way in Hell these Lakers beat these Boston Celtics. Barring injuries or trades, the Lakers can’t beat this Celtics team.
steve a we need iverson bad now man please tell there a shot
to come to miami iverson please
Stephen A.
You must be on crack lol!!! you act like the Celtics will be invincible next year the need to think about the Cavs before the Lakers. Anyway in a seven game series with Rasheed and Artest being with both respective teams it would be a classic, but I cannot see th Big three winning anything else to old and before two years ago really never accomplish anything in regards to significant winning Lakers will still beat them. No way in hell will those Celtics beat these Lakers not now, Pierce will feel like he is getting Punked at a Rogers Park pick up game (Inglewood, Ca.) When Artest is done with him
###
From SAS: Not about to debate this issue with you. Boston will have a frontline rife with 7-footers, specializing in defense. Cleveland might be them, but not the Lakers. Period. We can talk about this next June. Take care.
@ko mcneal: I’m a Miami Heat Fan too! I think they can’t get Iverson now. All I want is Chris Bosh to Miami! He and Wade is will be a good tandem!
Steven for you to even utter the words “The Spurs are the 2nd best team in the West” is pitiful. L.A. won the title, but clearly the Spurs are more talented, just as athletic, and now since healthy, the clear cut favorite to not only win the West, but the NBA Title.
###
From SAS: Whatever!
Good choice AI- keep sitting .Do not let these hoagie eating owners use you for tickets sales , chose your team wisely. You know your worth …Thanks for another good strategic evaluation Steve!
Stephen A.
My man when it comes to sports! I’m a true Orlando Magic Fan, and I personally believe that it will take until the All Star Break to see Orlando’s potential for this year. Will Jemeer return to last season form? Will VC play highly motivated? Will the team chemistry be good? Will Bass contribute greatly with consistent minutes? Will Ryan Anderson give what Courtney Lee gave last year, except from the 4 position? If these things go well I believe Orlando, THE DEFENDING EASTERN CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS, will be the team to beat out of the East.
Good luck man, I’m praying for your continued success.
Terry L. Bowser Sr.
###
From SAS: Thanks, Bro! Totally forgot about Bass landing in Orlando. That may change my opinion about them a little bit.
I assume you KNOW that Chris Bosh is leaving the beautiful and great basketball city of Toronto as soon as he gets his chance next off season??? Right?
###
From SAS: You assume correctly, sir.
