Goodbye ESPN!!!

stephenaradio-150x150

My last day at ESPN is May 1. It’s been a wonderful, wonderful ride, filled with great accomplishments, great memories and, most importantly, great friendships. It’s difficult to express how appreciative I am to everyone at ESPN for all they’ve done for my career. But nothing lasts forever. It’s time to move on.

While my love for sports has never dissipated– of course, I’ll never let go of sports– my desire to venture beyond sports into the world of news, politics and entertainment has grown. Where that will take me? Who knows, but you can keep up with me right here on StephenA.com as well as on Twitter to find out! I’ll just be moving on with some degree of sadness, remembering all the friends I’ll leave behind.

Great seeing you at the Madison Square Garden periodically and I had a good time watching a Knicks game and assessing the team with you at the beginning of what is last season now, in the press room at MSG.

I’m sad to see you go. I hope you end up with Turner for their NBA broadcasts. Now there is no one at ESPN that is willing to take Skip Bayless to task for his constant condescending remarks about outspoken black athletes. He hates any black athlete that isn’t a “Yessuh, Boss” type guy and who is willing to express themselves. J.A. Adande is good, but you see “token company man” all over him.

Thank you for sticking to your guns. All the best for you in the future. Bless your haters, because they only are showing you how great you are.

Why it isn’t on ESPN is a bit of a surprise to me. If it is about your passion and personality then how do they explain Dickie V remaining in his spot as he regurgitates the same old phrases? Just asking.

Wherever this journey takes you, I hope that you will have the opportunity to be exposed to more of the world who have no idea who you are, unless they are in to sports. #####
From Stephen A: Actually, you’re the first person who’s advice I won’t take seriously. My opinions? Say what you will. But my reporting? My track record will always speak for itself. I’ve proven myself for 15 years. Say what you want. Bang away

Will you be renting a U-Haul to carry your ego with you wherever you end up after this failed attempt at stardom? In your time at ESPN, you taught me something valuable: It’s not about the things that you say, it’s about the volume at which you shout them. I’m sure your superiors also appreciated that style of communication, and in no way did that play a factor in their decision to terminate your contract.

    #####
From Stephen A: Actually Sir, I’m sure you’re wrong. Contrary to what some may believe, I’ve never made an attempt at Stardom. In fact, I have no desire for it at all. Regardless of what you may think of me, and you’re certainly entitled to think what you want, my only mission was to go about the business of doing my job to the best of my ability. I’ve been a Journalist for 15 years, elevated to General Sports Columnist. I’ve hosted my own Radio and TV show — never asking for either position. I was asked to do those things. And now it’s over. On to new challenges. I’m sorry you didn’t like my style, but I promise you one thing: I never cheated anyone. I gave my all. Perhaps too loudly on far too many occasions earlier in my career, but the effort, the honestly, the reporting, the elocution was always there. And if you think for one second my leaving ESPN is a bad thing, that this is the end of my ride, you really don’t know anything about me. Stay tuned! The best is yet to come.

I did not know they were getting rid of you. About time. The second your show came on the tv or even radio, I immediately turned the channel. You are a “know it all”, and do nothing but ramble, much like Micahel Irvin did. There may be many people who will write in and say they are going to miss you, but I know of many who will be releived you’re gone!! There was just no way people could stomach you for a whole show.

    #####
From Stephen A: That’s the beauty of life. None of us are a finished product. I’m not unhappy at all. I learned a great deal in my 5 1/2 years at ESPN and I’m very thankful for the opportunity. But this is just the beginning. You couldn’t stomach me? Man, please! Sometimes, when I watched tapes, I couldn’t stomach myself. Didn’t even know I was yelling half the time. But I know this: I never cheated my listeners or viewers. I’ve been a reporter for 15 years. I always gave max effort. Was always real and true to my heart. Never lied to any of you, and never short-changed you. If you’re glad I’m gone, that’s your perogative. There’s only one problem with that: I’m not gone. Don’t plan on going anywhere for a very long time. But I will pay attention to your criticism. I’ll learn from it. And I thank you for taking the time to express it. Wow! ESPN will NEVER be the same. I’m so used to your flamboyant style and “telling it like it is” approach. I guess ESPN was intimidated by that, huh? I cannot see how ESPN hires a former GM who don’t know how to draft players and made a team the biggest laughing stock in NFL history last season, as an analyst and NOT bring back a very good reporter/columnist who gave his all to the network. SHAME ON YOU, ESPN for losing you and Emmitt. Continue to be REAL and wish you the very best.

    Mr. Smith:

As an African-American male who happens to be a high school princpal in rural North Carolina, I understand truly the challenges that WE can face. The only “YOU” that you can truly defend is the real you. The thing that I’ve always appreciated about you is that I felt that you were uncovering the real facts. Even if I disagreed, which was very rare, I felt that you believed in what you were saying. Moreover, challenges to us being ourselves will always come because society has an expectation that we should somehow transform into something else once we’ve reached a certain point. I’m not talking about the Tiger Woods’ of the world, for those folks have always been in a compromising environment. I’m talking about those of us who truly understand the struggle and then when the struggle gets a little easier we still don’t forget to be ourselves. Thanks for always doing that, and please don’t lose that.

You are in the greatest position for a sports journalist. Based on the comments I have read on this board, half the people hate you and half the people love you! There have been others:

    Howard Cossell
    John Madden
    Ali
    Prince

It wouldn’t be bad to be named among that list. People who have half the people hating them and half the people loving them, ironically, make ALL the money.

Remember who you are and more importantly what you bring to the table.

Quite frankly, you are going to be great!

    Hey Stephen,

By the response you recently posted it seems that you’ve implied you’ll either be on radio or TV?
“Stay Tuned” We know that you can’t keep a good Man down. Well, myself and the kids from the center are looking forward to hearing from you and seeing you again soon. The young fellows know that the haters want you to be effete to produce the material that you know so well, but you are effulgent and the head hunters know you can’t keep a Diamond from shining (You’ve gotten plenty of job offers right here on your website)…:)

Keep the faith and be blessed

I always liked you and here’s why, you are always honest and straightforward. You are also passionate and sincere. They’ll always be the haters. You are who you are, so don’t change. I agree with people that you’d be a good fit on Turner Sports. You could join former ESPN castaway Mark Aldridge. ESPN NBA coverage was at its best when it was you, Greg Anthony, Tim Legler, and Mark Jones/Mark Aldridge. Miss those days.

I just found out this BS, I left my response to ESPN via phone & email, the phone person agreed Stephen was one real Mofo, I can point out many that Steve is above in the sports world. Steve is in the top 5 in sports journalism so I don’t understand what happen. But everyone please voice their anger as I did. Never forgot when the wife and I were watching the Laker game and Mr. Smith said “you have to be boo boo the fool not to go to Shaq” from that moment I was onboard. Was disappointed in the CNN thing cause Steve is a sportsman. Good luck stay in sports and sports only. I see that face on TNT.

Man, i loved you and Mike Micenelli on ESPN radio. You guys had incredible chemistry. I loved how you guys used to try to catch each other out there on everything from sports facts to each others relationships. How you guys used to take callers to the carpet. Classic…NY in every way! I think if more folks in other geographic regions had ever listened to that radio show, they would truly have understood you as an intelligent impassioned brotha who was always ready to say how he felt and willing to acknowledge when he was wrong.

This is a great day. All of my emails to ESPN have finally paid off. I will be able to watch ESPN programming without the obnoxious, self righteous, and largely ignorant, comments of one Stephen A. Smith. I have never found Stephen A. to be entertaining in the least. I have always viewed him as a Bill O’Reilly type.

You know, the type of guy that likes to argue just to hear himself talk, and is not capable of admitting that someone else’s opinion may hold even the slightest bit of value. I really hope that if Stephen A. can manage to find a job he tries to differ between blunt honesty and being flat out pig headed and annoying.

    Happy Trails!

I’m not trying to hate on you or anything, but from all the years that I have watched ESPN and the other shows I saw you on like the news shows, I do not recall anything you said that was worth remembering. I don’t mean to be hurtful with comments like that, but I have never once paused and thought to myself, “Hmmn, he’s very astute in his observation.” Not once, and do you know why? Excessive verbiage. You say a lot and often times seem like you’re trying to beat the other guests in how many words you can cram in before the buzzer sounds, but your words lack substance. Many people get annoyed by not only what you say, but how you say it. You sound like famous attorney Leo Terrell on steroid, but you talk like a bad Jesse Jackson impersonator, trying to sound smart by using big words that normal people don’t use in everyday conversations. You don’t need to do that. Slow down, condense your thoughts, be respectful by not talking over the other guests, and show a little humility by admitting that others may be right without the usually irritating phrases like “but at the same time.” IMO, more people will remember you and what you have to say that way, instead of wishing that they could somehow reach into their tv’s and pinch your lips shut. With the economy the way it is and probably getting worse in the coming months, I’m not sure turning down ESPN’s offer was a wise decision. Many people would give an arm and a leg to get the contract that you turned down.

Good luck, sir. I wish you much success.

I feel like Florida when James died. Damn Damn Damn James!!! I know all good things must end but this is still gonna sting a lil bit. When you first came on ESPN, I was like “Who is this loud mouthed jackass, and why should his opinion count?” As time went on and almost everything you said in your analysis was ringing true, I began to respect and look forward to your segments on the NBA. You are by far my favorite ESPN analyst EVER! I was kind of upset when Michael Irvin left NFL Countdown but I got over it and understood why he had to go, COWBOY bias. There is no bias in your reporting. I really loved Quite Frankly and IMO you were the “Man Oprah”. The only thing that I hold hope for is that you join Eddie, Kenny, and Charles in the fourth seat. No disrespect to CWeb but he’s just not you. That would make TNT the best group of any sport of all time. I do understand why you want to do more than just talk basketball and wish you well in all your endeavors. ESPN will continue on and find new talent but you will be missed by all of those who listened to what you were saying, not how you said it. I appreciated it because you NEVER let anyone slide, not even your friends or yourself. Everyone was held accountable in your analysis. The only people in your field doing that today are the TNT cast (Eddie, Charles, & Kenny), the NFL Countdown Cast(Boomer, TJ, Chris, Ditka, & Keyshawn), and the PTI cast (Cornheiser & Wilbon).

I saw this on twitter, and I must say I was surprised. First, your radio show was short lived, but it was great. It was way better than anything else ESPN has on its network at the moment. Really, I thought it was the best show, just behind Jim Rome. Second, the thing I like about you is that you are always fair, maybe except for your treatment of Rasho Nesterovic. In general though, it seems that your opinions are real, they are fair, and most of all interesting. So many of your peers sound like they are being fed lines from producers. It doesn’t seem like you are one of those guys. I think you would be very interesting in a political forum. Either way, I have enjoyed you in the media for the past few years, and I hope to continue to enjoy your interesting commentary in the future.

Of course I have to ask, are you cool with Skip off air, or do you two really not get along?

I have never heard anyone white, black or other get away with the sewage you spew on the radio and TV. It’s pretty obvious from the eye rolling of your “friends” on the broadcasts that they are tired of your trash too.

Take this time and listen to your tapes. Unless you want a life in Community Broadcast Radio in the ‘Hood I suggest you evaluate your act and mainstream it. And btw….I’m assuming you’re white by your choice of words to me, so please allow me to ask you this question in all seriousness: Why is it that 98 percent of the time, when I’m calling out BLACK ATHLETES, I never hear from people like yourself. But the 2% of the time when I have the temerity to address racially sensitive issues, you treat it like that’s all I ever talk about, label me a racist, engage to childish, juvenile name-calling and wish that I were gone? Are you sooooo afraid of tackling issues sensitive to ethnicity and this is what you resort to? Really, I’d love to know?

I appreciate you not being afraid to talk about sports and also mix in politics and what goes on in the community. Hope that you get your own show soon, continue the great sports chatter, and be an inspiration to those up and coming sports writers.

P.S.- You may have calmed down a little but you are still who we thought you were. I bet the name Rasho Nesterovich still drives you crazy.

First of all, let me say I attended NCCU and I was proud to see you on ESPN. One of my best friends is from Philadelphia, so I was able to follow you there as well. I am a daddy’s girl who grew up watching football and basketball with my father, who thought he was the African-American Dean Smith. I enjoyed “Quite Frankly…” and I was disappointed when it was cancelled. Who else in the world could interview Allen Iverson, break down that defensive wall and make him cry? I loved the segment (I think it was once a week-Sundays?) where you and your guests gave opinions on different sports and/or current events. Your opinions (really the guest’s too) were always insightful and oftentimes, gave me something to think about (and I’m nobody’s dummy). Anyone who encountered my father never had to wonder where he was coming from on any subject. He was extremely intelligent, opinionated and brutally honest. I see those same qualities in you, and thus, never had a problem with your delivery (that’s what the volume button is for). I enjoyed watching you and Skip go back and forth. Both of you are very intelligent and I always felt that you challenged him (at times, you could see him thinking). I don’t believe there are many guests on “First Take” who could do that. In 15 years, you have achieved great things and even greater things are in store! Not only is this ESPN’s loss, but a loss to those of us who love sports, and our young African-American men. I believe its good for all races/cultures to see and hear you like it or not. I look forward to your return. God Bless!

Stephen A., I was just reading the story in my daily paper (The Virginian-Pilot) of your departure at ESPN. Needless to say, I was shocked. I have always considered you to be an articulate, candid, and talented professional in your craft. Moreover, years ago, when I saw you for the first time on TV, I said aloud: “This brother is like a Black Howard Cosell–you can’t get better than that. That said, I am sad for ESPN but I congratulate you because bigger and better things await you. You’ll be hearing from me in the future regarding a speaking engagement. It always makes me proud to know that someone from an HBCU reached the level of opportunity that you reached at the newspaper in Philly and to ESPN. I did not always agree with your opinions, but you have to respect a person who stands by their words and I felt you did just that.

People don’t understand that in this business, WE have to work so much harder to stay on top. As a HBCU graduate myself (Aggie Pride), i’m constantly in “show and prove” mode at my job. The door does not always open our way and I’m glad you had an opportunity to kick it in. I’m sad that ESPN decided not to renew your contract, because it will be easy for them to quickly dismiss the next Stephen A. Smith that comes along.

And you weren’t doing anything but yapping about your career. But yet you’re always blowing crap about the responsibility of black athletes. I wish you well-but I hope you understand the importance of being humble.
    ###
From SAS: Brooke, that is such B.S. And let me say it right here plain and clear that I don’t appreciate you lying on me like this. I have never — repeat, NEVER — been rude in anyway to anyone who’s approached me about career advice. The haters are going to hate. I understand that. But there are enough VALID reasons to spew hate in my direction. There’s no reason to lie in the process. For the record, I consider it my OBLIGATION to give advice to anyone who approaches me respectfully and ask for it. I think it’s reprehensible for anyone to be rude to someone who does. It’s even worse to be dismissive, aloof or rude to Children — which someone once called up my radio show and tried to do until an elder white man called in and came to my defense, letting folks know that it was a flat-out lie because it was his son I was talking to. These kinds of accusations are things that can really bring out the ugly side in me because, quite honestly, my Momma didn’t raise me that way. So let’s stick to truth. Not innuendo. Not your interpretation of things. Not hate, for whatever reason. Let’s deal in fact. It never happened.
I won’t even discuss this again. I’m just letting you know where I stand.

In 2007 I was listening to a radio broadcast of yours right before the New Year. It was the end of the show and you left us with well wishes and a small piece of advice.
It was nothing really fancy about it but you wished us all a happy new year and acknowledged that many of us may have had a tough, stressful or disappointing year but the upcoming year would give a fresh chance to start over and get some things accomplished or may even completely turn our lives around in a good way…we never know after all. Your advice helped me a lot (being that I was ending a tough year in which I felt stuck in a dead end job) and I still think of it to this day. So I thank you.

How am I supposed to enjoy the playoffs without your candid, truthful commentary. Did ESPN not realize that you were the ONLY person getting the TRUTH from these guys. I would really like to know who made this decision, who was the person who did not realize that you had the INSIDE scoop ~ crazy is as crazy does.

Did the other yahoo’s who had the audacity to look up your site, read, and then write a comment not have the common sense to realize this as well.

In case you could not tell, you will be missed…the Playoffs—your ocntract ended at the top of the Playoffs, unbelievable. This is…no words.

Mr. Smith, I wish you the best in ALL of you future endeavors. I selfishly hope to see & hear you reporting sports (NBA & NFL to be precise). However, if that is not in your dreams/plans ~ your TRUE Fans understand.

I enjoyed the screaming. It confuses me how people can try to sophisticate such a hard-nose, gritty, and (often) tactless sport such as basketball. To try to stand there in suit and tie and explain why one set of 7’0″ tall super-humans are putting a ball in a hoop more than an opposing set is like sitting in a lion’s den and trying to determine the density of its mane. You do basketball the way it should be done, man, and I’m sure you’ll be in a better position by moving away from ESPN.

If not, you can always try hockey. It’s like basketball…just a lot faster, and players are ENCOURAGED to fight. With you’re intensity, you’d fit right in :)

Loud, brave, intelligent, entertaining, on point, and you’re real. I trusted just about everything you said. There were some things I disagreed with but that was far few in between. You are free. You will shine. I will be there. Let’s do this. We love you man.

BTW…for all you haters…Stephen A. Smith is by far one of the greatest sports analysts of our time. Period. Why? Because he can give you the game, the issue, or player just like everyone else. His gift is he can do that while making us feel like he’s sitting at our kitchen table or our living room. Don’t too many analysts have that and he does and it’s highly appreciated. Don’t even try to compare.

Apparently Stephen A. was more than that since you decided to come on to hiw website and read what he had to say. If you did not like Mr. Smith or respected him as a journalist, then why even come here and spew your little venom that means nothing to the man?

Bring back Stephen A Smith is all I have to say! He was blunt, and told it like it was. I enjoyed his straight forward no nonsense aproach to his commentary. ESPN is not better off without Stephen A, without a doubt. When I heard he was leaving, and I heard they wanted to give him a pay cut I was dumbfounded. Clearly his value is well established and was on the rise. The paycut offer did not match what he brought to the table, and I’m glad he didn’t except it. Stephen A, we look forward to seeing you on a different network and bringing clarity, substance, and the love back to sports television commentary.

    SAS,
First off I’d like to say I’m sorry about your departure from ESPN bro. From a fellow African American writer I feel your pain.

Let me get right to the point. Understanding the historical development of this country any concious African American knows it’s a matter of time before the establishment silence those who rival mainstream lore. You kept it real in your own way. The man took your newspaper column, radio show, tv show, and magazine column.

    Why?

I don’t know but the bottom line is white folks aren’t going to pay outspoken African American men who attempt to speak out. I don’t know the specifics in your case but I’m assuming complexion may have something to do with it.

I’m a writer myself. I understand the system and how it works. I took a silent oath that I will keep it real until the casket drops! My intellect, passion, and wisdom aren’t for sale now will the latter be compromised to please the man.

The key with me is I’m freelance bro. I’M FREE. If go to my blog everything there has been published in BOTH white and African American papers. You see SAS, I finance myself. I understood years ago for the knowledge I drop white folks can’t have someone on staff who speaks THE TRUTH, THE WHOLE TRUTH AND NOTHIN’ BUT THE TRUTH.

My knowledge is not confined to the jurisdiction of sports. I’ve been blessed with a unique wisdom and so have you. So I’m coming through the back door and simultaneously building my own house. I’m on the make you are rebuilding.

    Collaboration perhaps?!

I got a media pass to cover the US Open last year, the World Series, Obama’s Inauguration, and Tiger Woods among other thigns. Wasn’t too many who look like us covering those events bro. I was reppin’ a small African American paper at those events. As I looked around those media rooms I KNEW few if any rivaled me in terms of skill and passion. Cards are stacked but I persist. Like Ali said, “To win I must suffer.”

I’m for real BUT I’m not mainstream yet because I’m working the system while being INTERDEPENDENT of the system. But rest assured I’m comin’ and I will be bringing the heat! Each day I press these keys I know I’m getting closer to claim my shine.

I’m writing a book on race and sports. I’m in dialogue with publishers and some of the top authorities (Dr. Lapchick, Dr. Sailes) in the study of race and sport. Slowly building me team to make a run for the ages. If for some reason it doesn’t go down right I will go out the trunk Too-Short style. I’ll bet on me till the day I die!

I’ve been blackballed and labeled as a racist. That equates to truth in my world. Comes with the territory. But the difference is I’m not tied to the man financially therefore I don’t have to beg for space, credentials, or their money. Building the foundation of my work is first-benjamins will come later.

In closing, they many can take your space and play with your money but he can’t take away your passion, intellect, and talent. Man didn’t give that to you therefore he can’t confiscate it. Your gifts come from God bro. Keep doing YOUR work and you’ll be guided where you suppose to be.

    Get at me!

In a world with so many people who are political correct, it’s great to see someone like yourself who is always honest and real. I enjoyed your work at ESPN. Loved the radio and tv show. But I’m also glad to see that you want to broaden your horizons. I’ve caught you a few times on MSNBC talking about politics (I may not always agree with you, but that’s cool. Steven, Let me be honest here. I could not stand to listen to anything you had to say on ESPN. I thought you were loud and obnoxious. In the past two years while I went to college and was a stay at home father I watched ESPN quite regularly. I started following you closer and little by little became a fan. At the end of 08 beginning of 09 I paid close attention to first and ten especially when you were on to debate Skip Bayless. This is when I became a true fan of yours. You were entertaining and knowledgeable about sports and could put Bayless (Joker) in check. I am upset that I will not see you on first and ten anymore the show will never be the same. GOOD LUCK.

I absolutely love NBA B-ball and feel that losing you from ESPN is like losing KG from the Celtics, Yao and T-Mac from the Rockets, or Ginobili from the Spurs… Yeah you’re in the playoffs but no where near a contender anymore. Your Show was great because not only did you ask the questions everyone wanted to know, but you got the answers from the persons mouth unlike a lot of the other analyst personal perception of what was reality. I mean who else is going to call out the chumps in the NBA like Kwame Brown and Raaaaaasho Nesterovic. I am fortunate enough to catch you filling in occasionally for Steve Harvey on his morning show where you never fail to disappoint me as one of the deacons, your insight on the Strawberry Letter, and your update on who’s a stud in the NBA. Hello Mr. Stephen A. Smith,

I love to listen to, and watch the sports analysts just as much as I love the game of basketball. Out of all the sports analysts, YOU were/is my favorite. For the past month, I’ve searched different television stations looking for you. I hadn’t been able to find you. I asked family and friends about you; no one was able to tell me which station you were on. I usually watch a lot of ESPN, and I didn’t see you on. I was wondering what happened to you. I would stay up to watch your show, “Quite Frankly” also, but no signs of that. I’ve been missing you and no one could direct me to a channel to find you. Due to vacation this week, I decided to take the time to look on the internet to get info. Finally, I have the answer to my question. To say the least, I am so sorry that ESPN let you go. I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED to watch/listen to you. Not only because I think you are a handsoome man, but because you were on top of the breakdown of sports, especially basketball. When I read your blog and realized ESPN let you go, I felt a surge of sadness for you. I really feel ESPN let go a good man of character. Oh well, it’s their loss. I want you to know that I loved watching you – you’re handsome! I also want you to know that I loved listening to you – you have a high sports IQ. Watching you added fun to my life! One of my sentiments is, “What is life like without the NBA?” I have an added sentiment, “What is ESPN like without Stephen A. Smith?” Hey Stephen, I ask that YOU respond to this email, and not your writers. I know that I will never know if you responded or your writers, but you being a man of integrity, I ask that you take a minute out of your busy schedule, like I did, to put your personal touch to my email. I simply want to know that the reply from you is strictly your words. I would appreciate that very much because I was/is your #1 fan. Love ya! Be blessed!

    Hello Mr. Smith,
It is a sad commentary that you are no longer on the air as a talk show host. I reside in the New York Metro area and am a avid Sports Radio listener. There are very few African American talk show hosts out there (at least those who will give a different perspective). I primarily enjoyed your show because you were courageous enough to give an opinion which better expresses racial biases that exist in the athletic world. The media sometimes have a distorted view of the Black athlete. You have had a tendency to give a refreshing opinion which better articulates how African Americans may feel! As a frequent listener to your show over the years, it appeared to me that your co-hosts all seemed to be somewhat antagonistic towards many of your views. Many of your white listeners seemed to feel that you were over the top when it came to racial issues (if they had attended Historically Black Colleges, as you and I have, they would have a different perspective). They have no idea what over the top really is! I am a huge fan of my college alumi William Rhoaden who wrote a book which somewhat touches on those issues. Both you and he were a breath of fresh air in sports media. Yes….you will be just fine. I just wanted to show my appreciation for your open and honest opinions and not being a sell-out amongst the few AA’s who have been given the opportunity to do Sports Programs. Much Success to you!

From SAS: Marty, if I thought you knew what you were talking about, YOU’D HAVE MORE SUBSTANCE with what you’re saying. But you don’t. It’s not about the game. It’s not about money. It’s not about thinking I’m bigger, Bro! It’s about wanting to be something other than a basketball analyst over the course of the next 20 years. It’s about NOT wanting to be a prisoner, placed in a position where you could lose you’re job because a Commissioner could wake up in a bad move and end your career with one phone call. Believe what you will. But trust that you don’t know my life. If you did, you would’ve never sent this email.

“Listen Stephen, act this way, be this way.” Please!!!!They could not control you. That was the problem. These coorporations need control of their employees and if they feel that wont happen, they will get rid of you. It’s not good enough when you’re good at your job, they want you to act, sing dance and exhibit “apprpriate behavior” in their eyes. And these people on this site (the haters) are just as brainwashed. You’ll never achieve your highest by being someone else’s man! You only do so being yourself and being the best at what you do. Good luck, Stephen. Apologize to no one. Pray…then be your own man. All the best! You got love from your people on this side! One.

Hey Stephen, I’m a fan of yours and I didn’t know that you left ESPN. I was waiting for your insight on the 2009 playoffs. I always thought you kept it 100% real when you were on, and didn’t hold back. I enjoyed “Quite Frankly” while it was on and as a black man I know that it’s almost impossible for another black man to host his own TV show. Best of luck on whatever you do in the future and I’ll hope to see you again on TV.

SAS, I find it interesting that your detractors were the first to exult at your departure from ESPN but over the past month as your fans (who actually have a life beyond sports media) have discovered your absence, they are the ones who have expressed their appreciation here at your web site of the work you did. Since I posted on May 20, there have been 28 entries and only one of them could be considered negative. No doubt you’ll be busy tonight with the NBA draft; have fun and I look forward to hearing more from you soon.

I’m really not understanding why there are so many haters looking you up on Google, finding your website, logging into it, and taking their time to write negativity. If katz aren’t feeling you, why give a damn and do all that, you know? If I’m not feeling someone, why would I waste my time looking them up and going to their website to write a whole essay about why I don’t like them? It’s silly really. You’re a stronger guy then I am, Stephen, to take time to actually read most of the hate mail also and actually uniquely respond to each one of them. I guess haters are good for the soul…Must mean you’re doing something right and only fuels you lol!

Anyway, I was just coming here to get on you for leaving ESPN1050, cause it was the highlight of my day from 2007-2008. I’m from & live in Boston and I enjoyed listening through the internet. But now that I got on your site to get on your case about leaving 1050 (plus I haven’t seen you get on Skip in awhile) and plead for you to find a way back on the radio, I see you bounced from ESPN altogether…on my birthday of all days (May 1st)! My dude, I truly wish you the best in whatever you do, and I’m hoping to see you very soon on the air. I would say don’t mind all these haters and whatnot, but it looks like you already got that on lock. I would say you’re the realest dude in your opinions, but I think you already know that cause I feel that was always your mission. You could be obnoxious at times, but to me that was the appeal cause it was like you were “one of the guys” who would tell it like it is whether I wanted to hear it or not…Not some scripted phony who’s trying to be politically correct for the camera or radio airwaves.

One more thing, definitely I was hatin’ on you cause I’m a General Hospital fan also and you got to be on an episode! I’ve been a fan since ’97 and my boys are always gettin’ on me about it, but they don’t understand how gansta the show can be lol! Anyways, I’ve said a lot. Keep your head up, man, and don’t tone it down for any of these people. You wouldn’t have made it this far if it wasn’t for you doing you. Imma follow you on Twitter (username: ZEO2K) so I can stay up on what moves you’ll be makin’ in the future. One.

Even though I was sometimes annoyed at your screaming you did, I understand it’s your “niche” and that is what is needed in such a competitive market. I recently got hooked on your podcast and thought you had some great comments in them and love how you say what you feel without just saying abrupt face-valued comments to gain attention. I still don’t understand why they didn’t want you. You spoke your mind better than anyone else on ESPN. No disrespect to Avery Johnson, and whoever else they trot out there to try to talk basketball. But, not only were you just as informed as any person that played the game. You were one thing that they never could be… A PERSONALITY!!! There are alot of changes over there I don’t like. To me, Sean Salsbury was as good of an NFL personality as you could find. And they would rather have Keyshawn. Come on, ESPN. What the hell are ya’ll doing? Later S.A.S, J.PRovOSt

From SAS: Every company has the right to do whatever they want to do, John. Everyone has their own agenda. All I know is this: So long as I’m allowed to do the things that I want to do (essentially, being a voice for my community regarding whatever important issues develop), I could’ve worked for ESPN for the rest of my career. Even making half as much as I was making. The same applies to TNT. I really do hope to work with Charles, Ernie and Kenny someday. I absolutely, positively, love the NBA that much. The Players, coaches, executives…everybody. I just love covering Pro Basketball. Hopefully, God-willing, I’ll be back doing it someday. What I won’t do, however, is have it defining my life….being placed in a box and having it define the rest of my career. I just don’t want that. There are too many other things I want to do and speak on. Doing those things WITH THE NBA is absolute heaven to me. Doing the NBA…..AND NOTHING ELSE….is just unacceptable. Especially at this point and time in my life.

My favorite episode is when you had that rant about Tony Romo being one of the unadressed problems on the cowboys. “I was there, He got stompted and beat down on national television then look like he was about to so to fridays, ruby tuesdays, or Tony Romo’s to go meet up with Jessica simpson. That is a PROOOBLEM (As you make a circle on the desk with you finger then point in the middle of it). When you got that kind of problem at your quarterback position don’t come talking to me about no receiver. I don’t want to hear it. I don’t want to hear it.” Classic. To tell you the truth when I first heard you I couldn’t stand you and thought you were a racist. After a few months of listening to your radio show at work, I realized that you are far from it and you are actually 1 funny s.o.b. . Weather it was with B.T. or Gordon, or Mike Micanellie ( who by the way I thought you 2 had the best chemistry) I realized that you did what no other sports talk show host did , you made it human. I don’t need a talking encyclopedia, or a arrogant know it all. When you would stumble on a particular sport or history of a sport it was usually funny and entertaining.I know what I m watching when I watch sports I don’t need someone to explain the ins and outs to me or force there high powered opinion on what I should like or what kind of fan I am or should be.People better learn how to separate the athlete and the talk/TV show host. For some reason a lot of people expect perfection from both. Your job was to inform and entertain, which you did great job of.The truth is you are better than espn (or should I call it The Brett Farve/ Tony Romo Network, thank god for the MLB NFL networks I havent watched Espn since they came around) I wish you the best and will truly miss antics, the yelling, and the Love Doctor. Great job on leaving, your act wore out a long time ago.

When I listen to sports that last thing I want to hear is someone raise their voice and talk to me as if they are a Southern Minister. Just talk, stop preaching.

Listen to Trico, now there is a class act.

Now if we can get Lebatard off the air….even better.

Good Luck in your new adventure. I’m originally from Philldelphia and I was glad to hear that you are there on the radio. On a sports note: I differ with the media’s comment that there are no young, Black Baseball players in the U.S. good enough to play pro baseball. The baseball recruiters haven’t checked out the little league fields in the neighborhoods, highschool,or college teams. There are a pethora of potential great young black players. If they want to know of some–just ask me.

StephenA, you’re a bright, intelligent and informitive writer, but yelling and foaming at the mouth isnt the way to get your point across. You can be brash and opinionated w/o being embarrasing to the black community. I sincerely hope you leared from your experience at ESPN. Every act gets tired (some faster than others)…Its OK to be yourself and be the voice of the our people, but don’t be the words of our people, its makes us look bad. Good luck with your next opportunity.

I am familiar with you from ESPN and know that you are always opinionated and outspoken, but I had no idea you had such conservative views. You really spoke to me and I want to thank you for that! Any political aspirations? You should seriously consider politics, because you have the charisma, the energy and the viewpoints of a true leader. The best of luck to you, in whatever you do.

I’ve been a fan of yours for yeeeears. The thing I’ve always loved most about you is how you have a mind of your own and you are not afraid to say what you think even when it’s unpopular. Whether on MSNBC or on with Mark Levin you have a gift to give a perspective in a way that causes people to actually listen and think about what you’re saying. Like they said on Shawshank Redemption, “Some birds aren’t meant to be caged.” While I’ve enjoyed you on ESPN (I don’t know why they have the current NBA crew that they currently have), I think the impact you can have on a larger scale in this country is more important than your commentary on the NBA. Keep doing what you’re doing. I’ll continue to follow you whereever you go!

Life is too short to spew so much hate and the beauty of living in our great country is that we have the freedom to choose what we want to watch, listen to, etc. Simply change the channel and try to refrain from saying things your grandfathers would say…50 years ago!!!!! We’ve come to far to resort back to that ignorant, uneducated way of thinking.

Just saw your interview on ESPN’s OTL First Report regarding the latest Tiger Woods story. You should be more careful when you talk on behalf of the “black community” because we do not have some monolithic consciousness that you get to tap into and represent.

    Mr. Smith:
Just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed your show Quite Frankly as well as your other broadcasts. If I remember correctly, the last Quite Frankly broadcast had a panel discussion in which the names of Ali, Malcolm X, Elijah Muhammad were mentioned. I thought this was one of – if not the boldest display of independent production of a nationally broadcast talk show that I have seen. That particular show as well as the many others that I watched made me a life long fan of yours. I waited for subsequent broadcasts but none came … no announcements or anything. Was that topic too much for ESPN? Did they feel that you had crossed the line? I told several friends that I didn’t think the program would last because of your insistence of primarily Afican American expert guests (who were excellent by the way). For me, you had the best talk show on t.v. bar none (Oprah, Larry King, Mike & Mike, etc.). It is an unfortunate commentary about the larger society when powers to be try to diminish a talent such as the Stephen A. Smiths of the world. Thanks for all that you bring to the table … and remember that there are plenty of folks who will sit and eat with you.

It’s weird while reading the comments one writer stated, “I’m glad I don’t have to hear you turn everything into a white & black thing”. But as I kept reading you could TOTALLY tell who was glad to see you go & who hated to see you leave. There were a few exceptions like the 21 year US retired Army gentleman but the vast majority you could tell who didn’t like you or maybe just didn’t like you “flavor or style” were OBVIOUSLY WHITE. The fact is it is a black, white, hispanic, asian thing. We all have different tastes, likes & dislikes & being a person of color I admired & like Steven’s style. Your style reminded me of my dad & uncles arguing in the backyard while playing cards but turning around & laughing at each other, all while having a good time! It was “familiar”. We all aren’t going to favor the bland “Bueller, Bueller” style of broadcasting like some “others” do. You don’t like the loud in your face & as you may put it “Ghetto” style (ghetto is just PC for meaning black) well………TOUGH!

Good luck my man! Hope to see you with your own daily show again. You may have to tone it down just a smidge for the “man” but just get the show!

I’m reading through the comments here and many savage Mr. Smith but he has the balls to keep these posts up. Most would delete these comments but Smith has the class and self confidence to take the fire. Stephen, best of luck in your career. I look forward to seeing what you do in the future.

I naturally would like that Lindsay Lohan could get herself together. What exactly is the woman’s issue? The woman has anything and everything in the world going for her and simply does not have any idea!

    Hey Steven A.
When you first got to ESPN I felt like many of the haters here. Damn why is that guy so angry? Even then I would never come on this site and write the things some of these “people” wrote.
I listen to your radio show on Fox in SLC every day and have seen a growth in your delivery and a humor I didn’t know existed.
With the exception of your Tommy Lasorda sound bite bashing golf (golf is a sport) I love the show and am excited to see your progression into other media in the future.
    Luck

    Stephen A!

I listen to your podcast on Fox Sports everyday! It’s great to see you move onto new heights and challenges. Forget the haters, forget those who doubt you, because honestly, we’re all doubted and hated.

I do miss the NBA talk on ESPN. What are the chances of you working on daily or weekly NBA podcasts?

And one last note, people are stupid for thinking you are a racist, JEEZ, can we grow up??

Hello stephen, sorry it did’nt work out , I think its bull due to the fact on its takes three people to replace you. Sometime during your topics people don’t like hearing the real deal. I cannot wait until you start your own show !!!

Thank you Stephen A., for your wonderful comments, common sense and ability to speak frankly. Many people cannot tolerate this, but I for one am very sorry to see you leave. I wanted to know if you heard the Tebow interview after a Bronco game, when he said: “I know I am a running back, but what little boy doesn’t want to be a QB in the NFL?” I found this insulting in the extreme and as a long time Bronco fan I almost hosted a party when Elway got rid of him. Thank God, someone in that organization has some sense. Thank you for the great memories. Keep defeating Skip!!!!!

You can certainly see your enthusiasm in the work you write. The sector hopes for even more passionate writers like you who aren’t afraid to mention how they believe. At all times go after your heart.
